PeerFactor invents 'peer-against-peer' networks
Posted by CodeWarrior on May 7, 2004 at 9:14 AM   (printer friendly)

Huge controversy in France: Retspan, a French anti-piracy organization, has launched a new service called PeerFactor. The idea: pay P2P users to distribute fakes that redirect downloaders to legal web sites.

This service has 2 effects. First, it creates a new kind of spoofing method based on Web users. Second, it brings P2P users to legal download platforms. Members are paid according to the number of redirections or purchases that are made thanks to the fakes they distribute.

Launched nearly in secret 1 month ago, this project has drawn a lot of attention. During the last week, France Info (news radio #1), TF1 (biggest French TV channel), many newspapers and dozens of web sites have relayed the story.

Some agree with this kind of anti-piracy action. Others criticize this project that is already dividing P2P community. And in the meantime, hundreds of Web users rush on PeerFactor's Web site in order to pre-register.

Pre-registration is now available for US / English users at http://www.peerfactor.biz

Retspan administrators were actually not expecting such buzz around PeerFactor. And they now have to face majors and editors who are interested in the concept. The main question for observers is now to guess how profitable this service can be.

This is almost the same idea as the one patented by TU this week that "floods" p2p networks with "decoy" files.

Sure, PAY me to NOT promote RIAA tunes...

(I ALREADY "anti-promote" RIAA tunes for free! It takes up at LEAST 40 hrs of my week... I WOULD LOVE SOME $$$ FOR MY EFFORTS!)

I think the patent people might have a reasonal case against the French for illegally duplicating their process.

Yea, Let the legal war begin!

(Note: The above is a sarcasm. Ofcourse, the French can't fight a war...)

In other words, they're legally distributing a trojan file.

Oh yeah right, like anyone interested in making money is going to make fake "Lunachicks", "Leftover Crack", and "Mission Of Burma" files... I have nothing to worry about as I don't download RIAA files to begin with. They are the ones that are going to be duped. Go ahead and load up the P2P network with fake files... do you honestly think that we can't filter them? Fake file filtering is already being used by most P2P networks anyway... It looks like they're losing money on this deal.
