Tell Mama!

Sony is NOT going to get away with all this! PLEASE contact me if you are a victim ASAP!

Simply hit the "contact us" button, give a real e-mail addy, (because a REAL person will likely contact you back, NOT a pre-generated return e-mail) choose "other" for the subject-line, and to start the message, type in "Sony Rootkit Victem" ...then give a brief account of what harm (that you know of) has been done to you.

DON'T spam us! We want to hear from true victims who might be interested in fighting back via legal means!!!

(More details later!)

=====================

UPDATE:

Here's a toll-free number to call

1-888-766-2690

Ask for Larry or Steve and tell 'em if you are one of those who bought any of the infected Sony CD-roms and stuck it in your computer.

You can also send an e-mail to:

I don't KNOW the details yet. All I know is that "something's up" and "in the works" and that I am just passing along as much of the message as known to me at this point.

(But I think Sony is in for an ass-whoopin')

EFF has confirmed the presence of XCP on the following titles (each has a data session, easily read on a Macintosh, that includes a file called "VERSION.DAT" that announces what version of XCP it is using). If you have one of these CDs, and you have a Windows PC (Macs are totally immune, as usual), you may have caught the XCP bug.

Trey Anastasio, Shine (Columbia)
Celine Dion, On ne Change Pas (Epic)
Neil Diamond, 12 Songs (Columbia)
Our Lady Peace, Healthy in Paranoid Times (Columbia)
Chris Botti, To Love Again (Columbia)
Van Zant, Get Right with the Man (Columbia)
Switchfoot, Nothing is Sound (Columbia)
The Coral, The Invisible Invasion (Columbia)
Acceptance, Phantoms (Columbia)
Susie Suh, Susie Suh (Epic)
Amerie, Touch (Columbia)
Life of Agony, Broken Valley (Epic)
Horace Silver Quintet, Silver's Blue (Epic Legacy)
Gerry Mulligan, Jeru (Columbia Legacy)
Dexter Gordon, Manhattan Symphonie (Columbia Legacy)
The Bad Plus, Suspicious Activity (Columbia)
The Dead 60s, The Dead 60s (Epic)
Dion, The Essential Dion (Columbia Legacy)
Natasha Bedingfield, Unwritten (Epic)
Ricky Martin, Life (Columbia) (labeled as XCP, but, oddly, our disc had no protection)

Several other Sony-BMG CDs are protected with a different copy-protection technology, sourced from SunnComm, including:

My Morning Jacket, Z
Santana, All That I Am
Sarah McLachlan, Bloom Remix Album

The EFF goes on further to say:

"If you haven't been infected yet, to protect yourself from XCP in the future, disable "autorun" on your Windows PC. Once you have done so, however, these CDs may not be accessible under Windows unless you have specialized ripping software installed; these CDs are encoded in a way that intentionally confuses standard Windows CD drivers. For a smarter audio grabber for Windows, you may want to consider using Exact Audio Copy, which reportedly can read these CDs if you have turned off autorun and avoided infection by XCP."

We here at Boycott-Riaa say:

"If you are still buying RIAA product, you are now starting to see something we have been warning folks about all along!"

BOYCOTT ALL RIAA PRODUCT! BOYCOTT ALL DRM INFECTED DISCS & DOWNLOADS!

" "So, I called Sony's tech support at 800-222-7669 and eventually the obviously Indian rep told me told me to call Sony BMG at 212-833-8000.

The operator at Sony BMG in turn directed me to call the Sony tech support number. Talk about a run around.

So, I did a whois on Somy BMG's website, and called the technical contact at 212-833-7305. This resulted in me being transferred to an individual who indentified himself only as Sony's internal techincal support. He was very rude, said that he wasn't even supposed to be talking to me, and ultimately directed me to Mark's post and told to download RKR to remove the DRM rootkit. I attempted to explain to him that this program only works on NT and was no help to me since I'm running Win 98. He said that he couldn't do anything else. When I said that I wanted to speak to his manager, he told me that management was unavailiable, and when I said that I didn't appreciate this unauthorized and apparently illegal modification of my system, he said, "So sue us." Class Action Suit. Have you heard of it, Sony? "

The "Sony DRM" story is getting to be so HUGE (thankfully ONLY to the Internet and bloggers/sites like ours) that I am starting a "one-stop-shop" starting place for new folk who want to learn more.

Folks, I am MAD AS HELL about what Sony has done even though I am unaffected because I was SMART enough to quit buying RIAA crap several years ago.

We KNEW this kinda crap was comming down the pike.

...but just because some of us were already prepared for this predicted/expected DRM nightmare does NOT mean we are gonna only go "tisk-tisk, shoulda listened to us"

We TRIED to influence the general public, but HONESTLY, the RIAA (SONY and etc.) had a HELL of a lot more "say-so" about what ever got said in the media...

It is NOT your fault if you got bitten by the snake!

Sony is gonna PAY!!!

The slogan:

"Fair Use of Purchased Works is vital to new technology and new ways of enjoying music. Block fair use and you will suffer the consequences of stagemation of the economy. And the rule: Those who put DRM that locks you out of your rights to your purchased music shall go to hell in a lake of sulfer and fire.

Thank goodness I was smart enough to inspect the CDs before I purchased them. If you see either that "Copy Control logo" on the left side on that transparent bar, and see the "compatibility" table box like the one shown on the EFF site, that CD is copy protected with that evil DRM and must be avoided.

Go to:

http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/form11.html

And also
http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/form14.html

Where it asks for the Artists name type in some diatribe

Where it asks for the Album Title, type in more diatribe

Where it asks for Store Name, type in yet even more diatribe

Where it asks for email address try something that will cause them trouble such as uce@ftc.gov or some chronic antispammer advocate.

This will hopefully force Sony to make the "patch directly downloadable."

CONTINUE to take that high-road hawk.

Let's not have any "pretend" victims calling the hotline after-the-fact. (Tempting as it may sound to some of us!)

"It is NOT your fault if you got bitten by the snake!"

This reminds me of what they teach about sexual assault, that it's an act of power and violence and not about sex. Although the comparison wouldn't be accurate as far as severity of the action (that is to say, rape is more loathsome), the circumstances seem parallel, that the Music Industry isn't in this for a single monetary payment (be it $20 for a cd or $4000 for a settlement). They're in it long-term market domination and the power to extract several payments of any form possible from the consumer for many decades to come. And nothing the consumer does (like dressing like an attractive file-sharing "pirate") justifies the commercial rape of the consumer and his rights.

Asking people on boycott-riaa if they have been affected by DRM on SOny CD's is like asking the pope if he ever used a condom.

But seriously, I imagine a lot of our readers (even if sypathetic to our agenda) don't take our advice completely to heart and still buy the RIAA's DRM infected garbage...

Perhaps this scandal will "learn 'em".

...Hate to say "we told you so!"
