Boycott-Riaa Dictionary
Posted by Mike (Shmoo) on November 28, 2005 at 9:13 AM   (printer friendly)

I'm snagging the over-all idea from Wikipedia, but specifically for OUR purposes. Please feel free to contribute and/or update this thread with short, concise definitions of names and terms that are of Boycott-Riaa interest/relevance.

Am I creating a whole bunch more work for me and future admin? Yup. (But I think this "dictionary" idea is important and useful enough to us to make the effort.)

Unfortunately, I can't think of a way to "alphabetize" the listings, ...so forget about that sort of sophistication.

Let's just create a list of terms and definitions. I will continue to edit this thread to the best of my ability to make it useful as possible.

Feel free to re-define any previous entry and/or come up with new ones.

Do NOT use this thread for idle "chit-chat" or "off-topic" discussion. ONLY add new terms and/or edits to previous ones.

I will DELETE/EDIT everything below the "divider-line" (same sorta thing I have doing with the "Soapbox" or the "Welcome" thread) so, don't expect anything you post here to remain forever unless it is the "perfect" definition of a term.

Follow my lead folks!

Boycott-Riaa

The name of this website/forum; an online "gathering-place" and "discussion-group" intended for folks who are fed-up with the evils of the RIAA and like-minded cartels.

RIAA

The "Recording Industry Association of America". A lobby/trade group acting on the behest of the worlds largest and most financially powerful record labels. Our dire and bitter enemy. The term RIAA also is loosely used by Boycott-Riaa to refer to the recording industry in general. (Depending on context.)

Cartel

"3. - an association of business firms establishing a national or international monopoly" --Webster's

DRM

"Digital Rights Management". Code embedded within computer software (often music/movie files) and/or digital media players themselves that is primarily a tool of the cartels to restrict fair-use by fans/consumers AND to extend monopolistic control of media into the digital age.

DIVIDER LINE
=========================

See where I am going with this? Please keep entries short and concise as per what WE at Boycott-Riaa mean most when we use the terms in our forums.

If you can't figure out the exact format I am using in my posts above, don't worry/fret. Just post what you want said and I will edit as I see fit.

UNLIKE wikipedia, you MAY be "biased" with your definitions.

This is OUR dictionary ...intended as a list of terms from OUR context/point of view and is NOT an attempt to be any sort of "general" dictionary.

(So, have at 'em!)

It's kinda already implied/covered by the term "Boycott-Riaa".

"The Majors" - slang used to describe Sony, EMI, UMG, Time Warner, & BMG (also see Evil Music Cartel)
"Spin" - not really lying, but only the truth the spinner wishes one to see (also see Ex-Wife)
"intellectal property" - non physical "property" that was thought up by a person (or persons) and able to be Trademarked or Copyrighted as belonging to someone. Such examples as programming, source codes and music have been in the news lately.
"Independant Music" - Non-Riaa music (altho some labeled as such by the RIAA is indead RIAA controlled, beware of this)

PC - Personal Computer, usually refers to a Windows based machine rather then a MacIntosh (also see "paperweight") "Comp" is another abravition as is (sic) for Spelled InCorrectly

Pirate - a violent marauder on the high seas who seizes ships and their cargo and often murders or ransoms its passengers and crew. Also, a term misapplied by the RIAA and their friends to file-sharers and copyright violators in order to villify them despite the blatant discrepency between the two meanings.
Accepted by some file-sharers as a proud moniker in spite of the attempt by the RIAA to villify them. Accepted by others as appropriate only when applied to copyright violators who do so for the purpose of selling illegal copies for profit.
