Welcome to Boycott Riaa
Posted by Mike (Shmoo) on November 26, 2006 at 2:48 PM   (printer friendly)

Folks, let's get back to work.

The "other" home, boycottriaa.com is still there and it is still the place where I will post all the menu/side-bar items since the ones HERE are too hard for me to maintain properly not knowing enough html/css/php along with the proprietary quirks and tricks of DMusic's own web-code (...the whole reason we started the new site in the first place.)

Here, where you are NOW, is the place where we will pick up the pieces and try to be "interactive" again.

Anything Boycott Riaa related deemed worthy of your comments will be posted right here at boycott-riaa.com from now and through/until the for-see-able immediate future

...and all those side-bar links, menu items, etc. will be currently updated/maintained at the http://www.boycottriaa.com>other. new site.

Simple enough?

It's the best I can do at the moment.

I don't expect a huge number of peeople who bothered to come to school today to come rushing in immediately pepe. We may have lost a LOT of our following lately.

The trolls last week were at least RIGHT about the fact that things have "gone downhill" lately because of the tech problems. (Partly because of the "system" we work with ...BUT probably "more-so" because of MY fault of NOT being/becoming the web-code master I shoulda been instead of just and only spending my time on being an administrator/editorialist.)

But, I am trying and/or being forced to LEARN the skills/tools I should have had a long time ago with the advent of my own NEW site (yup, this time all mine, not something via DMusic. -- uh, NOT to disparage DMusic. leflaw & company is WONDERFUL and all that...)

I am about 6 thousand years from being "good enough" to commercially launch my silly little 'side project' ...but, the fact that I am doing it, and the things that are involved are teaching me many of the skills I lack (but should have had all along) while trying to administrate all things :noriaa: (Boycott Riaa)

Time to GROW folks. EVOLVE or DIE!

(And IMHO, let's pull our troops out of IRAQ ...now. WTF is the POINT in "staying the course" when Saddam is already in jail, and now, about to be hanged. Let Iraq's people figure out what IRAQ wants to do and/or become on its' own. USA does NOT belong there in the middle of it all!!!

...oh yeah, I forget sometimes. "It's about the oil."

Money to be $MADE$ by the oil corporations!

...well, who makes the decisions about things in the USA?

You guessed it.

I suppose even the Democrats are gonna keep our sons and daughters in harm's way at least a couple more years.

Can't displease our nations TRUE corporate rulers now can we?)

This is Amerika! $$$ to be made!

I did the "time warp" trick again on this article. I hope it doesn't screw up DMusic's own newspage. (If it does, I'm SURE leflaw will bitch me out for it.)

MY REPLY to him will be... "Damnit Boss, why don't you kick your coders in the ass and make them give me better tools to work with then? ...that "feature link" button on the admin side only works for the front page at DMusic. I tested it several times and found that the ONLY way to get an article to stick at the top is to jump in the time-machine."

"Grrr..."

independentm...

My guess his answer will be along the lines of:

"Well, you are part of my team, but I don't get any direct revenue from Boycott Riaa or Boycott-Riaa (and such a thing was never ASKED in remumeration for the webspace which has always been provided as a SERVICE to the community.)

Folks,

I am PUBLICLY asking leflaw to PRIVATELY tell me how much he'd be willing to sell the url's of Boycott-Riaa and Boycottriaa.

(and BEGGING him to let me have them on a "payment plan" because I have NO capitol what-so-ever...

lol,

assuming he'd EVER sell such great domain names in the first place.)

independentm...
Date: November 26, 2006 @ 6:17 PM
Naw, he won't ever sell.

Not for any price that I can ever afford.

(I have about $6 in my pocket and NO credit-line.

Larry RIGHTFULLY should charge a ridiculiously huge number by comparison for the URL names, considering the history/name recogition.)

But, HEY!

Didn't Madison Aveneue create a nation-wide all-sweeping holiday that is soon arriving...

"Back to the humble 1 to 2 posts per threads I see."

Look at the front page. While all of the stories are topical, they don't all require comment.

Artists are leaving MySpace.
A UK ban on mp3 transmitters lifted.
You're now allowed to test DRM for security problems but you still can't copy your DVD to an iPod legally.
WiFi Standards have a patent issue.
Wiretapping sucks.
DRM sucks.

Some of us don't bother to post when we have nothing worthwhile to say about the topic at hand.

Hey I'm still lurking. I kinda stopped posting when I couldn't figure what was happnin between the 2 sites.

I still don't get why some people take the time just to snipe. I'm all for differing opinions, I don't agree with everything that is said here myself. But lets have some rational debate.

PerilousTimes
Date: November 27, 2006 @ 10:45 PM

re: "rational debate"
that's the second worst thing about trolls--they prefer to "snipe" rather than engage in rational debate
that's because their primary mission is to disparage and discourage
and sometimes to get revenge against the website owner

gdZiemann
Date: November 28, 2006 @ 10:29 AM
The trolls seem to specialize in ad hominem attacks, which avoid addressing an opponent's main argument entirely by casting into question the person or entity who is making that argument.

They never contribute to a rational debate, focusing instead on anything BUT the topic being discussed.

Thanks for providing those three examples of the classic ad hominem attack. It is also important to note that this sort of tactic, while still widely used in the political arena, rarely changes anyone's mind about anything, primarily due to the fact that the attacker never has anything relevant to contribute to any discussion.

gfmlcka
Date: November 28, 2006 @ 4:54 PM
Karl Rove uses the same strategy albeit with wedge issues via proxy to swing short term public attention opinion. Coulter uses it to sell her crappy, ill researched books. Limbaugh, when he isn't patting himself on the back uses it to expand his illiterate listener base. O'Reilly uses it fluster his debater before cutting them off in a self righteous huff.

Funny how they all support "I'm a uniter not a divider" Bush2. Division is their goal.
Antagonism fuels their ratings and pays their salary. They all, and some liberal clowns too, 'Carry the water' to use Limbaughs phrase, prostitute themselves for money and attention.

It's all sophistry.

Ignore it, it will evaporate on its own like a fart in the wind.

It's Just Gadfly again, Shadowmom.
Pretty easy to spot.

He created ID GeneticJackHammer on
Nov 1st, hoping to capitalize on the
potential political threads. When no one
took his bait, he created user 1854 so
he could create responses, even if he
was ignored.

1854 got banned by Lef, but Lef missed
GeneticJackHammer ( accident or design ;) ). He created OsamaObama
today to continue the 'attempted' disruption.

That's why he's so familiar. He's a one

The largest Irony is that for all his hatred
of lef and this site, he must spend at
least as much time here as some of the most dedicated, CONTRIBUTING visitors/posters.

I spend so much time here because
A. I believe in the site and it's purpose.
B. I LIKE the people who visit and run it
( tho opinions vary on issues )
C. Health issues give me a lot of time
at home to spend here
( also ironically, those same issues
prevent me from seeking a more
active role in the site :( ),

Hate and obsession is , apparently, our
trolls only motivation.

Well, I've been hanging in there along with the other "Old Timers". I've been checking both sites, but I think I'll hang here until the other site gets ironed out.

As far as the earlier comments from our new resident troll concerning folks leaving....In your dreams. I've been out here for four years and plan on staying as long as there is a site to go to. I have simply not wanted to accidently scare you off with any feedback. After all, I haven't had such a long running stream of old fashioned stooge style comedy in years.

Seriously, GeriatricJackAss (or whatever you name is. The page tuncates, so this is my best guess from the available characters), you have proven to be the most generous person I have ran into to date. Every time you open you mouth you give away your stupidity.

Hang in there all...Despite the internal site woes, we are making a difference. I have seen the boycott spread to device makers and software vendors. The DRM tragedy is slowly awakening the masses and the efforts of sites such as this do help in the cause. I have seen results with family, friends and go-workers. As a matter of fact, I get e-mail almost daily from those very people telling me how they avoided getting sucked into purchasing this CRAP. I also know that many are frequent visitors because they point out new posts.

Thanks to everyone for being here and thank you Shmoo for sticking it out for so long. Those of us who look here to find out what's happening in the Copywrong world appreciate all the effort you make and feel every ounce of the pain you feel. People of lesser strength would have given up long ago.

notwithstanding recognizing that the troll ostensibly IS against the riaa and on our side in that regard

it's just that his divisive and strident nature

No, this ones not.

You're full of shit Dreddsneak..as always..I am against the RIAA as much as the next man. I support Indie artists and want to put an end to what is being called music today and peddled

PerilousTimes -- when you make assumptions you become the troll :-) Whomever you think i might be, you're wrong :-) If you wish to verify my identity shoot an email to Shmoo. He's a friend of mine. In fact he is the one who told me to give leflaw a call about the maters i can not reveal until i'm told i have permission to. I'm just having some respect because I'm not sure if leflaw would get mad at me for revealing everything right now and i've heard having leflaw mad at ya isn't too fun :-)

So lets all calm down and focus on the real enemy -- the RIAA :-)

Twarrior

Genetic -- i agree with you. Thats a part of my purpose here just waiting for leflaw to give me the green light on a few things. In all honesty, and this is as much as i feel comfortable revealing right now -- i've been hired by leflaw as an admin on this site. I needed to fax some stuff to him before he can give me all the admin info and i'm waiting for him to let me know the faxes made it and to give me whatever he feels i need to do what needs to be done. So my hands are tied until i have the go ahead. If *anyone* is in doubt of my words, email Shmoo. He's the one that told me to talk to leflaw.

I've been lurking for a while, reading the posts and have been trying to decide what category OsamaObama, 1854, Genetic... fits into.

Perhaps, he is the Troglodyte,

Troglodyte seems to have emerged from the mists of time untouched by human evolution. Devoid of a single progressive idea and lacking the slightest awareness of social and cultural advances, Troglodyte has developed an incoherent political philosophy that he characterizes as "conservative" or "libertarian", but which could be more accurately described as "bigoted narcissism". His aggressive posturing often frightens off weaker, more timid Warriors. In pitched battle, however, Troglodyte easily loses control and his attack quickly degenerates into a rant. Just for the fun of it, Weenie, Issues. Pinko and Evil Clown will sometimes deliberately goad him into a towering rage.

Mike2212
Date: November 30, 2006 @ 5:10 PM
or, could he be the "Rebel Without a Clue"

Rebel Without a Clue's deep seated and infantile hostility to authority motivates his random and seemingly gratuitous attacks on list owners, Admins, Nannies or anyone else who attempts to maintain order and civility in discussion forums. Differing markedly from Rebel Leader, he is unattached to any cause other than petulance for its own sake, and will therefore seldom inspire general insurrection. In his frequent and ineffectual attacks on the established order he will often cite the Bible, or the US Constitution to support incoherent arguments. Rebel Without a Clue NEVER reads forum FAQs , and loudly decries as fascism any enforcement whatsoever of forum rules.

I personally think that battling trolls in the comments field is definately counter productive. I think they should be scolded in private mail. So i guess with that, the troll topic is over -- i hope! :-)

gdZiemann
Date: November 30, 2006 @ 5:55 PM
Every year, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we get the "take a more proactive approach to taking on the RIAA" complaint, and it's always the same person, the same argument, the same tactic. You want us to attack, go into the stores and mess up CDs so they can't sell them, protest in front of Tower Records, etc., etc.

None of that will change anything.

Knowledge is power. Seven years ago, I didn't know what the RIAA was. I knew the record labels screwed the artists on a regular basis, but I didn't understand how they did it.

Now we all know.

It is up to the musicians to change the status quo.

re: "the troll topic is over -- i hope! :-)"

it probably isn't (well, perhaps for this thread it could be, but i even doubt that)
because the troll, with more than one username, keeps chiming in periodically to insult people and belittle the efforts of this website

"I personally think that battling trolls in the comments field is definitely counter-productive."

PerilousTimes -- posting or not is entirely up to you. But everyone needs to have some control over themselves. If you don't, then perhaps you shouldn't. But as gdZiemann has already said -- no amount of "attacking" be it how this wbesite is run or smashing up cd displays is going to aid in what we're trying to do. Knowledge is truly power and only cooperating with eachother will get the job done.

Twarrior

A suggestion to anyone else who feels in an attacking mood -- even if you disagree with whats going on here -- maybe that energy is better spent submitting an article about it. This site does welcome *all* points of view. I think regardless of opinion -- the best "textual good" can be done in submitting articles about your concerns so that everyone can know about them and discuss them.

Dreddsnik

" agreed

"PerilousTimes -- posting or not is entirely up to you. "

True and not true.
This points out another of our trolls
goals.

Run people off the site.
How many lurkers fear to post, simply
because they don't feel like getting bashed ?

"But everyone needs to have some control over themselves. "

Absolutely.
But, then, there is always the one .. like
this one, that obeys no rule but their own.
So ..

Here we sit, again, being pounded by the SAME troll, over and over again.

"Knowledge is truly power and only cooperating with eachother will get the job done. "

Absolutely true.
So, since the troll contributes nothing,
adds nothing, intends to add nothing ...

It should be banned ... again.

Free speech has nothing to do with
taking a dump on the floor of your host.

"the best "textual good" can be done in submitting articles about your concerns so that everyone can know about them and discuss them. "

Good, true, but any REAL discussion will
not take place, because of the trolls

"it's always the same person, the same argument, the same tactic. You want us to attack, go into the stores and mess up CDs so they can't sell them, protest in front of Tower Records, etc., etc."

So gdZiemann as you well know I never posted "once" at the new site...Not once...And that site was averaging about two or three posts max..And you're blaming me??? Knowledge is power? Maybe...But I fail to see any real progress that this site is making to further any agenda. I see a lot of blahh blahh blaah for you Ziemann while kids are buying up Ipods by the millions loaded with drm. That tells me one of two things, that your message isn't reaching the masses and you're all talking shit...Or that this "movement" needs to move in a different direction. I understand that the average age for those in charge here is over 50 so one can understand the reluctance to change.. so be it. Another Holiday is here and the RIAA grows fatter while you all worry about trolls.

I challenge any members or lurkers alike to list where exactly this site is going wrong and where there can be improvements. Where does is start?? Is it the leadership? Is it the tactics? Is it the elders?

I will not attack anyone who comes forward...Let's once and for all see exactly if the numbers measure up. An open challenge to anyone!!! Let's see if 500 people come forward...300..100...50....25.

Hi Shmoo, ShadowMom, gdZiemann, pepe512000 etc.

My overall point is simply that in the event of troll insurgency (and in the mean time before any sort of banning can take place) all you (the collective "you" not pointing any specific fingers at anyone) are doing by replying to the troll is feeding his fire -- and that is what he wants. Notice my replies are directed at the non-trolls encouraging an end to the discussion of trolling. When i said "then maybe you should not post" I do not mean that as an "all encompasing statement". I mean if your responce is going to be "heated" and completely derail the goals the thread is trying to accomplish, then remain silent if you've so little control over yourself. Only reply if you're going to add productive statements towards the goals and purpose of what is supposed to be discussed. I've delt with tons of trolls on echomail networks in the bbs scene as well as usenet and really -- if you ignore them, they go away. Why? Because you're not giving them what they want if you ignore them. If you continue to engage them, you're playing right into their hands.

Date: December 1, 2006 @ 5:14 AM
Oh and by the way -- don't think it to be impossible for the RIAA to send agents into this website to troll and attempt to disrupt our operations. Wouldn't you all feel very stupid for playing into the hands of the RIAA? I would.

Genetic --

"I will not attack anyone who comes forward...Let's once and for all see exactly if the numbers measure up. An open challenge to anyone!!! Let's see if 500 people come forward...300..100...50....25."

If you've come to attack anyone then i find it highly unlikely that you're at all concerned with who runs this operation, how it's run nor anything else about it.

You'd also be very surprised how many people involved with operations here are in their 20's, 30's and 40's and not "over 50" as you've said.

However, the age of who runs things is truly irrelevent. It is how they are run that maters. We already have identified the problems and measures are being taken to correct them. However, this site is a public service. It doesn't bring the money pile rolling in. As such -- even though some people do get "paid" for "helping out" alot also don't, either. Among those who get paid -- it's not exactly 6 figures with full medical and a 401k.

Someone working at Mc Donalds gets paid more than anyone "working" for BRIAA or Dmusic. You know why? We accept what little can be provided because the fact that we support the cause and enjoy our work makes up for any sort of monetary deficit.

Happiness comes from living a good life and being proud of ones accomplishments. Not from piles of money.

You'll find happier people in the homeless shelters than you'll find working for the rich and all powerful RIAA.

If you can create a more productive website then feel free and we'd be more than happy to endorse it. If you have coding or HTML skill then talk to leflaw and offer to help correct these things that you feel need to be corrected.

Yes, I'm a brand new BRIAA / Dmusic employee (just waiting for all the paper work to proccess and for the green light soto speak, etc..). What I will be getting paid, isn't much. I'm 28 years old, not over 50. I run legalmusicsearch.com on my home servers as my personal way of helping this fight against the RIAA. I've been a computer technicial (among other things) for 13 years. I used to participate in a radio show that would confront and reveal the shady tactics of corporations by actually calling those coroprations and netcasting the calls.

Even though the show had all of only 4 episodes, you can hear them on ospreynet.info. They're pretty amusing, actually.

The fight against the RIAA is one of few battles in life you can wage and honestly be able to say "I enjoy doing it!"

So I encourage you to lend us a hand, or, as i've already said -- if you can not speak your mind without hostility, then i'd suggest you "not post".

Sorry for the small book -- but i also figured all of the lurkers need to know that we are doing everything within our power. But anything worth doing, is done in time. Time is what the "T" in "Twarrior" stands for :-)

This one's a little different TWarrior.
This one's span here has actually been

If you ignore this one, it creates it's

If you ignore those, it goes to vulgarity.

"while kids are buying up Ipods by the millions loaded with drm."

iPods don't come with DRM. If your iPod sales numbers are accurate, then that means the iTunes music store has sold less than 3 DRM-wrapped songs for every iPod sold.

"The age of a lot of those Ipod owners are more than likely under 18."

And they're not buying DRM'ed tracks because they don't have any money.

"So gdZiemann as you well know I never posted "once" at the new site...Not once"

Of course not. Then we would have your e-mail address and you wouldn't be tolerated.

I was talking about right here.

"Another Holiday is here and the RIAA grows fatter"

Really? This year's sales might match 1990, if they're lucky. A 7 to 15% drop in sales this year.

"But I fail to see any real progress that this site is making to further any agenda."

Of course you don't. Wouldn't expect you to. We can all see from your posts that facts and logical reasoning are not in your toolbox.

Dissing someone's knowledge because of their age? How much do you pay to go to college? Are all your professors teenagers?

If you want to change things, you don't do it by throwing a little hissy fit and insulting everyone that you expect to do your bidding. Sure, it's fun, but at least I'm old enough to know that it's not gonna do anything but chase everyone away or make them figure out how to exclude you, wasting any time (mostly volunteered time, btw) they may have had available to spend on something productive, like the DMusic artist features that have been appearing.

So continue your rant if you must, but I'm not listening any longer. It's the same way I boycott the RIAA's music or when my daughter whines. I just don't listen to it until the behavior changes. It's not there. End of problem.

Twarrior -- Tell fu-dog that what we need is an "Ignore Posts from..." list. Kind of like the Buddy list.

I don't think they've given up on the other one, pepe. It just has to wait till DMusic gets straightened out, unless Mike gets some help with it. I just wondered what your reactions were to the new layout, the new features, etc.

Tough question to really answer, as both sites come with good and not so good features...ok, the picture on the front of the new layout, not so good..it's kind of creepy..but the editing tools, awesome. And of course the polls...great. In the news is ok, except if you want to make a direct comment, you couldn't.

Anyone else care to critique?

gfmlcka

front picture is creepy, would rather see the RIAA toilet paper I linked to.

editing tools were great, especially after a few brewskis.

submitting articles should be easier, perhaps metamoderated to get to the front page.

would be nice if the next/previous/end/who's online buttons worked under Firefox 1.5.08.
(yes I allow javascript for this site)

Sorry, no cookie for you.

Ability to easily link to (just) images ala Fark would be interesting.

Just a wishlist.
I'll support, advertise and contribute to this site as long as Glickman, Bainwol and Sherman insist on putting the Ass in Association of America.

actually, God looked a lot like a third grade math teacher I had years ago. She was really tall and for being a 44 year old woman she was remarkably attractive. at least that's what I told her when she caught me trying to look up her skirt in the cafeteria. (didn't work I still got a paddling).

It was a terribly humilitating and traumatizing event from my formative years that has left me scarred, bitter and angry. I probably would have been better off not to bring it up.

damn black sabbath anyway, I'm throwing that cd away. (master of reality)

yet another reason to boycott riaa music.

"However, the age of who runs things is truly irrelevent."

Sure it is...The age of a lot of those Ipod owners are more than likely under 18. Think they're going to listen to old farts over 50?

-------------------------------

When listening is what makes money -- I think they'll listen to 90 year old grandmothers if theres enough of them to be worth listening to.

-------------------------------

That's why the site is boring with gdZiemann's endless blahh blahh blahh. Place needs so young blood with fresh ideas.

-------------------------------

Young is a state of mind, not a physical age. My friend Taylor is in his 60's and I think he'll be "younger" than you are or could ever hope to be. Just because you age, does not mean you have to "get old". Your flamatory attitude makes you older than the oldest person in the guinus books.

-------------------------------

Twarrior/Codewarrior/whatever...I really hope you are 28. I already see a sense of energy lacking from this page for along time. Good luck...I'll be coming at you hard!

-------------------------------

Your idle threats are meaningless. If i obtain enough control within the administrative ranks around here -- you'll bounce yourself off me to the point of receiving a concussion. Trust me -- people like you are the real problem with sites like this. As far as your continued grudge against leflaw -- I happen to like his style. You lack any style, tact or point what so ever. Your compliments towards me do not compell me to appreciate you. Words are meaningless. Actions back words. Until you start acting in a way that shows me you care about the cause against the RIAA -- you and I will be adversaries.
---------------------------------

Twarrior I like your style, maybe you can get something done right for once around here

--------------------------------

Stick your attempts at arse kissing in a deep dark hole. I'm not impressed. I think
Dreddsnik may be unfortunately right about you. You're pretty persistant. And if you ever compare me to leflaw -- have no doubts that thats the only thing you could ever say to me that i'd take as a compliment.

Messiah? With your usual flair, you've overstated your case. But I think he'll fit in very well in this hotbed of liberalism. And he can help the site--in what way do you? And this is a serious question. How do you support indie artists? Do you listen? Do you buy? Who? And how do you help this site?

GeneticJackH...
Date: December 2, 2006 @ 9:27 PM
That is a very good question Shadowmom....

Coming from somebody who didn't even know one of the most acclaimed Indie artist of the late 80's early 90's...

The Meat Puppets!!!

That in itself is Indie Rock sacrilege!!!

As for "hotbed of liberalism" that must be why the site is "really" bringing in 2 to 3 posts max.

Don't worry Shadowmom what I'm doing...You don't know me from Adam...My question to you is ...when did I ever see you promote an Indie band in your post? You're from Florida correct? Have you once given notice to the rest of us who's the band that's hot there? Who to seek out? Just what "is" the Indie scene down there..Where are the Hotspots to see great music?

Funny Shadow..I know much more about your politics than I do your musical taste.

Hell even Shmoo threw out a couple names of bands from time to time.

If this is your Media Matters Moment maybe I and the rest of the public should leave you alone...Seeing 2 to 3 posts on the threads

I’d say they’re doing just that!

ShadowMom

Wow, that was quite amusing. However, I expected that (and he even used a second alias to attempt to make his non-existant points also! woot!). Well, I'm just going to notate -- *just* for fun -- exactly how much he's made me laugh and exactly why :-)

First and foremost, I do not recall having given out my Deviant Art information -- so this tells me this person is so lifeless that he scoured the Internet for hours attempting to dig up (what he thought was) dirt on me. The only props I can give him is for his ability to locate information. So at least we know he has skill -- if not brains.

Second -- the pictures he located are *old*. This is what "our new hero" looks like? LOL. Haven't looked like that for quite sometime -- as my Avatar on the upper left corner of the page shows (taken the begining of this year, but I haven't really changed that much since then. Still look the same).

Thirdly -- I better have his vote -- seeing as i've got the lower front co-co nuts to say what needs to be said *and* back it with facts. I've yet to figure out what his beef is with this website (which also makes me suspect that he might possibly be an RIAA Employee -- I wouldn't put *anything* past those guys).

Now, I'll follow up with some fun I plan on having when leflaw gets done with proccessing the legal paperwork employment stuff and gives me all the admin info I need to get going.

#1 - this tool isn't the only person who's good at "finding information" ... first I will check the system logs for BRIAA and see what his ip address is (and any other information).

#2 - I'l give his ISP a friendly call -- ask about the weather, how the reps day was -- and of course -- if the ISP could be so kind as to remove this persons account for us and that we'd appreciate it greatly.

#3 - If I can manage to somehow find out this individuals real information (sometimes I can, sometimes i can't) I'll be posting his real name, address, phone #, etc... on this website so that any of you who feel they might wanna return his generocity he's bestowed upon this website can have their fun.

#4 - if this guy happens to be an RIAA employee -- i'm sure his ass will be leflaw's.

Now that this public service message have been concluded -- we now return you to our regularly scheduled troll. :-)

That will be followed with legal action. As well as contacting the FBI in which I'll give information that I've saved over the years as well as Lef’s threat of a government official....Actions I'm sure under the Patriot act should shut this place down. "However, i'm glad to see i've got you running scared to go off on such a tirad."

Running scared? Hardly!!! What I do have though is somebody making a public threat against a woman...Something that "could" be viewed as a "Credible Threat."

But just what is Cyber Stalking?

Well!

1) "Credible Threats"
A threat made to physically attack a person....

2) "Following"
Many of the general harassment and stalking laws in the USA originally required that the stalker be physically following their target in order to be convicted of stalking - another aspect of the law which simply does not apply in cyberspace.

3) Preserving of evidence
Preservation of evidence is certainly an issue when it comes to harassment. Although harassment online usually leaves an electronic trail, the trail leads to a computer rather than an individual and establishing who was using that computer terminal at that particular time is not easy.

4) Free speech Issues
Another problem arising when trying to apply laws to harassment type behavior is that in America and other countries there are laws granting freedom of speech and there are laws forbidding harassment. When does freedom of speech become harassment?

Regarding cyberspace, the central issue appears to be whether online communications are essentially public or private in their nature. If they are seen as public places then online stalkers can claim free speech rights as a defense of their harassment.

By the way I "have" saved every and all threats that this site "has" made to fellow members and would certainly fall under the term cyber stalking...

GeneticJackH...

Please be more detailed as to your hints :-) The way you responded I was thinking you were the troll under another alias. lol ... he seems to have so many.

Appology accepted, no worries. Once leflaw gives me the green light i'm gonna do as much as i can here -- and DNS Banning troublemakers will be among the priorities. So he better have his fun while he can. Because i'm gonna do my best to not only blacklist his ip but inform his isp as to his activities.

I just hope BRIAA supports wildcard bans. Will make life a bit easier.

For the moment however, this thread as become just a bit more than boring. I think my best action for now is silence about this topic until I get the access to turn my previous words into actions :-)

No need for anything like that to happen gfmlcka.

If and when things get really bad, banning the IP should be plenty strong enough action.

Folks, I appologize for being away the past few days. I will start a new "Welcome" in a day or two when I actually have time and access to my own PC so I can get some work done. (Been doing the out-of-town day-job thingy)

I also have a ton of articles to post.

...not to mention a lot of coordination with leflaw and TWarrior that needs done in order to improve things.

Gonna log off of here before I get into too much trouble for using the company's computer to do "personal" things. See you all Sunday and/or Monday, depending on how my schedual works out.

Twarrior
Date: December 3, 2006 @ 12:31 PM
Thanks for verifying who and what I am (or rather, am waiting on leflaw to become hehe). At least now anyone who may have still been semi-doubtful can rest easy at this point:-)

Yes Mike, there will always be Trolls. Just as there will always be burlgars. However, this is why locks and security systems were invented :-)

Seeing as I do not know what level of security BRIAA has in place for banning, filtering, etc ... this is going to be one of the first things I investigate once the access is given to me.

For a Troll to remain for as long as these Trolls tend to (or shall we say, one long-term troll with many names, as far as i've been told) in my mind should not be so easily accomplished by the troll.

Alot of the interfaces here are primative and need some cosmetic changes (among other things) and if the ability to filter is equally primative -- well -- I'm just going to have to fix that.

The software I run (www.synchro.net) has a very advanced filtering system. Should i discover that Synchronet's filter system is superior to the one at BRIAA -- then i've already got a plan of action.

Seeing as it would be utterly rediculous to expect the "already overloaded" Dmusic Techs to learn a new peice of software when they barely have time to "give it a good shake" after they use the bathroom -- I have a plan that is much more simple.

If leflaw were agreeable to helping me upgrade my bandwidth here -- my server could act as a "Centurian at the Gate" soto speak. When going to this site, my server would simply act as a passthrough to leflaw's server.

So if any trolls ended up becoming a problem -- I would check the logs on BRIAA to find out what the Trolls ip address was and then add it to my filter.

Of course the BRIAA site at this point would have to be able to deny all traffic to its ip address that did not come in as an http referer from my server (to avoid the smarter Trolls from slipping past the centurian using purely numeric ip addresses to get into BRIAA).

Hopefully this will not be nessesary. This is simply a "plan B" should i find that the BRIAA server can not filter to the level that Synchronet can.

I've got tons of measures to make BRIAA a much better place. I'm currently working on a brand new site design / layout that is more appealing to the eyes *and* is more efficient / easier to navigate.

I'll give you all a sneak peek after I feel comfortable enough with it to give leflaw a peek first :-)

Mike has already seen it so if you wish to know "if the new design is really all that good" just ask him. He seemed to be rather pleased with it so far.

independentm...
Date: December 3, 2006 @ 2:31 PM
Yes Twarrior, I am very enthusiastic about the ideas you have for the site AND am tickled pink that finally it looks as if we are getting a full-time tech-wiz to help out here at Boycott Riaa (both sites!)

Now all we got to do is get leflaw and/or fuDog out of bed and get you some of those keys to the kingdom so we can get to work in earnest and turn all this into something more than just a "stupid blog" (lol)

-----------

But seriously, don't fret the trolls too much. I have found over the years that they are actually often quite useful to bounce off of when making our points about things.

Sure, figure out technological tools/methods to combat them if/when such is needed ...but for the most part let those of our faithful participants who wish it be the ones who get down in the mud to fight with them.

I can tell you from years of experience at this site that it is a big waste our time as admin to get too personally involved and wrapped up in the recurring flame wars.

There are TONS of other things we are better off focusing on. The trolls have never caused any "harm" to Boycott Riaa beyond pissing us off and causing us to waste our time (...well, also driving away visitors who find the flame wars they ignite to be too ugly to put up with.)

When we let the trolls get our goat and we let ourselves be bothered enough to react to them, it is THEN that the trolls WIN.

Anywho, that's the way I have always looked at things. (Or, at least, have always TRIED to look at things.)

ever sit at a server?
4 sprint links, 2 trunks and ALL of NW MI dial-up.... yeah, smart man who got in on the 'net before I ever heard of it... now he drives a famous monster truck for a hobby... geese I remember back when he dated my sister (then again everybody dated my sister....)

so yeah, I used to sit at the server getting high with PheneX and XzedD (when you legally change yer real name to yer cyber-name you might be a geek) and I was amazed at the speed and at what was legal..... when you visit a site they legally have the right to all kinds of information (thank Al Gore for that). No warrent needed to look at yer desktop, yer OS, yer Whois, nor yer infomation in yer registery (among so much more). Anything I can trace using my firewall is 100% legal for me to know, use, post, ect ect

Trolls are a result of the RIAA not having the balls to open a real account and truely debate any issues. I for one would not stoop to childish insults to an actual RIAA rep here, but trolls are fair game.

Wow... Huge thread..

Most of it being slop... :(

InsaneWayne,

" Anything I can trace using my firewall is 100% legal for me to know, use, post, ect ect"

Not entirely true. :) If for example, I had your IP and knew your box was vulnerable to exploits, it would still be very much illegal for me to take advantage of it/them.

At the same time, if I didn't personally do anything, but I posted complete details to.. say usenet, you could still hold me liable for it.

It's not entirely a black and white issue folks, for those who care...

Okay then, back to lurking I go. Carry on then!
