Dr. Dre, Following Metallica's Lead
Posted by Heidi Chambers on May 19, 2000 at 8:02 AM   (printer friendly)

No, not Metallica. This time it is Dr. Dre who is leading the charge against Napster. On Wednesday, Dre E-mailed Napster with names of over 239,612 users charged with infringing on Dre's copyrights by downloading his songs for free. Unlike Metallica, Dre's attorney Howard King, has requested that Napster delete his client's work from their directory rather than blocking users from using the service as a whole. In response to the attorney's request, Napster has said that they cannot block files, only users. But that doesn't matter too much, because it is speculated that Metallica too, will ask Napster to have their music files be deleted from the service.

If indeed Napster does go ahead and block users with Dr. Dre's music, we could possibly end up with another outcome similar to the Metallica scenario. Users would most likely claim that have have been "misidentified," and Dre will be given the time span of 10 days to sue each user as an individual, which is totally unrealistic. The time and money it would take to sue such a large number of people, would end up creating more havoc for Dre than anything else. Once the 10 days have expired, each Napster enthusiast would have to be reinstated back into the service.

I am working my way through college. I love Metallica, and I like Dre, but I do not have ANY extra money to buy the whole albums, I admit, I will buy Metallica albums just to have them, any true Metallica fan would. Dr. Dre on the other hand, he only has one or two really good songs on an eighteen track album. Its either I go on IRC or Napster and get songs I like there, or nothing. Its the same with alot of other artists too. Dre, along with anyone else who thinks Napster is not legal (I'm not saying I think it is 100% legal) should be happy with the multi millions of dollars they are making now, and let the fans enjoy their music.

I'd like to see Dr. Dre or Napster try to come and delete the files that I'm sharing off of my hard drive. What ever! Wake-up dumbass, it's totally impossible.

I got every METALLICA's cd, every bootleg, video, and 170 posters. May sound like I am obsessed, but check this out: I went further and met METALLICA personally in Kiev, Ukraine. Hey, NAPSTER is ridiculous, and it must be shut down. REMEMBER: saying METALLICA or DRE already got enough money is unethical, because it is THEIR OWN BUSINESS and NONE OF YOURS! There are many people poorer than you. Nobody stops you from protecting your HOUSE or CAR or SOMETHING ELSE THAT BELONGS TO YOU - why shouldn't METALLICA or DRE do the same? THINK, and don't be stupid.

Hm, lets see.. I sorta like Metallica and Dr. Dre can fall down a hole. Furthermore.. it's funny that Dr. Dre sues Napster for copyright infringment when he himself got sued by Lucas Films for using the THX theme/logo whatever... :) Napster was created to trade 'legal' audio files, but hey.. everything PC related has its bad twists. =P

I think dre should NOT sue people because if all these people are downloading and uploading it that means he has "fans" and thats what hes going to lose if he sues because why are you someones fan if he sues you for liking what he does?

This is too ridiculous. Do you think you re leet kissing Metallica's ass doing what they did. You are loosing fans the same Metallica loose theirs. Read what just what InViZaBlE_IcE said. That's is so true. You are sueing your own fans, because who else wants to listen to your pathetic, boring and stupid music? Only your fans. And only your fans are the ones who care to have music of their idol. But because you give a shit about them, and you care about money rather than moral support from fans who enjoy listening to their artist music, you are going against them. Try to be original. Find a different way to attack this problem. Innovate and stop doing stupid things like sending a list of users.
Maybe you succeed and no more mp3s of your music are being illegally shared, but you will loose fans. And those fans are not going to buy CDs anymore, and your sellings will drop, then youŽll probably blame mp3s.again.

Yes this is a money issue. Why the hell are these artist going to sue napster. They just simply don't want true fans listen to their music for free. They want to see money incoming to their accounts, then they`ll let us listen to it.
Lets compare this with art. Wouldn't it be ridiculous if an artist wants to charge everytime a person wants to see their canvas or painting. They don't care, they just want their art to be famous and have some popularity.

So, one more artist has been added to the list of artists that are going to be boycotted. Dr. Dre is second after Metallica.

I'm not saying Metallica already has enough money, they deserve every penny they have. I'm saying, if you went to college full time, without any help, working 40 hours a week just to pay for college, and can't even buy yourself a soda because you dont have fifty fucking cents, you are not going to spend twenty dollars on anyones music.

So does that mean I can't be a fan just because I dont have enough money to buy cds? I'm young, I like music, I know how to get it FOR FREE, Napster was not the first place. If you don't already know, IRC is a great place to get mp3s. I have the same Metallica mp3s that I downloaded six years ago. Sure Napster is VERY easy to use, but all people have to do is go to an mp3 chatroom and you can get the same thing. There is no stopping it, as long as there are fans, and computers, mp3s will always be around.

In 5 years Napster type programs will be the at the mtv level. no one wants to be told what to listen to, napster (or whatever takes its place) will be able to suggest music based on what music other people with the same musical tastes have, show you news, pictures, videos, lyrics about your favorite artists and let you have girly little chats with other backstreet boy fans. digital music hasn't seen anything yet (in my opinion anyway)

The point is that none of DRE's stuff is good enough to justify buying so whether its dowloaded for free or i just dont have it at all he still wont be making any money out of me!

I love metallica and what they did pissed me off....i had over 100 metallica mp3s but.....i have alternatives to napster......so dr. dre its impossible to stop mp3 business

firstoff, napster has no database and secondly you can not block mp3's from user databases without blocking that user. dre's trying to avoid the backlash but what he is asking napster is impossible to do.

metallica has ten days to file against the fans that countersuited, maybe if all 300,000 banned users did the same, then they would've shut their fucking hole very quickly.

I personally believe anyone owning metallica and dre songs had it coming to them. But if they had tried to steal my hard earned Tom Jones files. I would have been pissed. Think about how hard it is to find all 197 of Tom Jones recordings, especially his underground recordings when he went through that horrible soul-searching sabbatical in the dark years of his career in the late 80'swhen he moved to Gautemala to pursue the life of a pornographic film superstar. Plus, I met Tom Jones at this concert in Ukraine, and he likes napster. All I'm really saying is Metallica and dre are found all over the net. Tom Jones singing "I am the Walrus" in Spanish, however is a different story.

At the moment the music industry is so afraid of change that they are trying to scare people from using services such as napster. I believe and hope that the music industry will dissolve and music returns to its roots, art, not greed. Once it is unproffitable to create another Britney Spears, the industry won't bother, and it will hopefully be the end of cheesey marketed crap. And we will be left with small bands, and the only people to make large amounts of money out of the whole music scene will be DJs. So at the moment the big companies are not bothered about todays profit losses, but the are fearing and trying to prevent tomorrows.

Try to stop me from getting your MP3s DRE! Come on I dare you! I have had your shitty ass songs on my hard drive for years, way before Napster was even thought of. You can't stop MP3 files. You can't stop our community of "file sharers." Soon it will be more than music; I've gotten many movies through Wrapster, gnuTELLA, IRC, etc. as well.

Long live mp3s, long live the Internet, long live NAPSTER!
