New Competitor to my.MP3.com, MusicBank!
A day before mp3.com settles a major label makes an announcement to work with MusicBank. Where did these guys come from? How long was this in the works? Slap in the face, wouldn't you say?
I would. A full day before the settlement was announced with my.MP3.com, BMG announces that they've been backing another company named MusicBank, that copies the my.mp3.com model almost exactly. And they've been working together for the past 6 months!
Interesting isn't it? I think it's just a blatent slap in the face to Michael Robertson, but I guess that's to be expected given how much they love him.
Anyway, MusicBank can only play BMG music, but they let you go through retailers and when you buy the CDs you get access to the digital files for free.
My.MP3.com has a head start so I don't know how much of a threat MusicBank will be but I hear they're heavily funded! Not like mp3.com is starving.. but..
Very interesting indeed. Comments?

Heh, who ever expected big labels to play fair game.. It's all about the money and getting their own business models to work. And with their lawyer army they can basically slow down any minor websites who have implemented something that big boys might want to copy.. |

This was completely secret? Well good job by BMG..
But now it looks like we will see a MSP (wow, I'm using a MP3.com coined term as my language now..) battle. And it won't be the technology. It'll be the content it has avalible.
In the future, I see these MSP's duking it out. Fighting for content. Sounds a lot like cable channels and broadcast networks of today.

I actually know these guys. They're a sharp bunch, but have been through some troubles. They lost their first CEO (who was a MAJOR player in the streaming media space) and their seed-round VC, both of whom should probably remain nameless since they haven't told anyone about them. I'm not about to spill that news for them... |
