Spam, Be Banned!
Posted by jark on July 4, 2000 at 2:47 AM   (printer friendly)

Some folks have decided that they want to use the news commenting system for spam, which is an unfortunate abuse of that feature.

You can consider yourself, and everyone in that domain, banned if you spam. What does this mean? This means that if 1 person from *.aol.com spams on the news commenting system then EVERYONE from aol.com will be unable to participate in our discussions.

I hate to sound harsh, however this blatant abuse needs to stop now. There are PLENTY of other avenues to use if you are a spammer and wish to advertise your site. The news commenting system is meant for COMMENTING on NEWS articles and therefore I will not tolerate immature people posting information that is not applicable to our discussions.

Remember: The FIRST time that I catch someone spamming then their domain will be banned as soon as I find out about it. End of story!

If you have an idea for an alternative method then I am all ears.

You're up late... get some sleep.

I think the best solution would be for you to require login before commenting.

Then when a SPAMmer comes along, you simply delete his/her account and all associated posts.

Otherwise you could find yourself without any contributors... one evil SPAMmer could sign up with several ISPs and get them all banned.

I know that registering is inconvenient (hey I haven't registered yet myself) but every other site does it, it's good for you to get e-mail addresses, and it's a stronger way of deterring SPAMmers.

Yes, I totally agree. Having to login in before posting would make it much easier.

Logging in wouldn't be a bad idea so people don't ruin it for the rest of us.

logins seems to be the solution but alas I as many simply wont register and therfore simply wont post and therefore wont have reason to visit the site... alas.

Its not like its really hard to register! And logging in takes all or 3 seconds and doesn't even require you to leave the page you're on...

In fact, once you login ONE time then so long as you visit the site once every 3 days then you will remain logged in.

For those that are not interested in registering, may I ask why? What is the big deal?

There are already 6 millions ways for a 31337 person to track one on the net get my e-mail, get a hold of me or whatever. Why would I want to give a whining peon my e-mail? I don’t just needlessly curse or otherwise act like a jerk so why would I want someone who just happens to disagree with what I might say filling my mail box with vulgarity and commonly pointless opinions. Whether or not you agree I am sure that you see my point. Being the administrator you must get loads of pointless fodder.

um... you lot aren't too clever are you... If you require a login to post, then the spammer will simply sign up with a duff account and spam, then when they want to spam again, they'll just signup again!

[some of you have even said how easy it is to sign up!]

There is no real solution to this... It may be a good idea to require a login to post, then when you find a spammer, you set something for his/her account so that when they next login, a cookie is put on their computer that the site recognises and denies access to... this isn't perfect but it will stop a lot of the less intelligent spammers who don't know what a cookie is or how to turn it off.

Another, possibly better solution, although much more difficult... would be an advanced checking of each message posted... that looks for certain things that are present in spammers posts... such as html tags for links and certain phrases that are used a lot. This would take a long time and a lot of thinking to make, but would work well if it was perfected.

Ok, that's enough fun for now...
enjoy!
