MamboX is finally here..or is it?
Posted by C.W. Bennett on July 4, 2000 at 11:10 AM   (printer friendly)

back in Oct 99 I first heard of a new mp3 product that was going to be released called the mamboX. The MamboX touted an incredible list of features, a low price, and seemed as if it would be available soon. At Comdex 99 I met, Jason Moh, the main representative of the MamboX in the U.S. He had claimed he would have a functional mamboX unit at Comdex. What he had was a bunch of crappy circuit boards wired together playing a mp3-CD. Jason put his honor on the line at Comdex, saying it would be released by Christmas. When it failed to hit stores by christmas, on some bulletin boards, Jason Moh was dubbed Jason "No Integrity" Moh. I feel somewhat bad for him as he is only a U.S. scapegoat, Tagram doesn't even produce the MamboX, the real manufactuer is Viewcome Corporation

Mambo pieces at Comdex

Anyways, since Comdex the MamboX release date has been steadily pushed back...until now. MamboX recently posted this letter by Jason Moh:

From: Jason Moh, Director of Product Marketing
To: All Mambo-X Enthusiasts

As you are reading this letter, our first shipment of Mambo-X P300 is already on the way to distributors worldwide.

I have waited for this moment much longer than anyone has. From the time development started in February of 1999, to the time it was announced in October of 1999, to now, the Mambo-X is shipping. I have to admit that there were difficulties with technical issues all along that caused our schedule to fall behind. Those issues never stopped us from putting Mambo-X into the market.

I have received an average of 300 e-mails a day ever since we announced Mambo-X. Among these e-mails, I have seen cheerful encouragement, questions, and also many doubtful criticisms. Recently, many of you have been eagerly expressing your anxiety, frustration or anger to me in person, and posting (mostly) negative comments on message boards. But, I chose not to defend these comments until Mambo-X is shipped. I've always considered those comments as just stating how badly people want to have this product. In fact, there was really nothing for me to tell; besides that many technical difficulties were causing more delays. I don't think posting those problems in detail on the web is a good idea.

The specifications are different than we originally announced. The design and look are different also. That's because we did a complete redesign after we determined that one major defect would consistently affect the audio output. Unfortunately, that was after we announced the product. Most of our distribution customers understand what skill and technical ability is needed to produce a product like Mambo-X, and they contribute continuous support to us. They have waited patiently, and they will receive the support and allocation they deserve.

Mambo-X does not stop at P300. The in-dash version of Mambo-X (C300) will be in production soon. For those of you that have been supportive of Mambo-X all this time, I thank you for your patience and appreciate your business.

We value your support, and will use it as a foundation to develop more innovative products like the Mambo-X. This is only the beginning.

Sincerely,

Jason Moh
Tagram System Corp.

Yeah, no kidding the specifications are different! The original MamboX was going to sell for $200, have a text displaying LCD, and have a 14 hour battery life. The MamboX just released is $250, with a numeric LCD and a 12 hour battery life. The MamboX doesn't even have the edge on the kiwi/genica/easybuy player anymore!

It seems Tagram pulled the old "bait and switch" maneuver. They baited us with the MamboX and switched it to something worse.

In fact, even though the MamboX is "officially" released now, I don't REALLY think it is. The player originally annouced on Tagram website is not shipping, therefore the MamboX is essentially vaporware.

Jason "No Inetegrity" Moh and Tangram are liars. After all the BS they put consumers through, I wouldn't buy a MamboX even if it were out tommorrow. Besides they've dropped all the features that were going to make it stand out like ID3 tags and .m3u support. And they're going to charge $200+ for the player with some crappy earphones and a remote?? Yeah right!!! Everyone send Tangram a message by refusing to buy their crappy MamboX. Go get a kiwi/genica/mptrip player if you really want one, they're cheaper and are real products.

Yeah right Jason. So what does this mean? We have to wait another year for you to answer tech support questions?

It now only supports up to 160, that's fucked since 90% of the mp3s released by groups are 192kbps.
