Hilary Rosen on Technology
Posted by Heidi Chambers on July 8, 2000 at 2:48 PM   (printer friendly)

It is a given that the music industry doesn't like Napster and other file swapping programs because they are supposedly taking away profits from the traditional music world. On the other hand, Hilary Rosen who is the CEO of the Recording Industry Association of America, thinks that the goal of finding a way to have technology work for the music industry is very attainable.

"I don't think anybody's goal is or should be to eliminate the technological capability of Napster. The goal is to find a way to have the technology work with creative interests, not against them. I think that's possible," said Rosen.

One of the avenues in getting technology to "work for them" is the idea of a subscription service for file swapping programs. So far no programs have actually implemented this new idea, but one could imagine that a fee would be set for unlimited downloads or a much cheaper fee for per download usage. Ms. Rosen backs up this idea with her statement, "I think we'll see some sort of dramatic business models emerge in the next three to four months."

Here at Dimension Music we believe that MUSIC IS FREE. Maybe, just maybe, Hilary Rosen is getting that idea too. "I have to acknowledge that Napster in some ways has created a movement. It's probably their dilemma as much as ours because it's become a movement for free music," she said. But then again, maybe not.

What Rosen said:
"I don't think anybody's goal is or should be to eliminate the technological capability of Napster. The goal is to find a way to have the technology work with creative interests, not against them. I think that's possible."

What she really meant:
"The goal is to destroy napster so we can steal their technology and charge the crap out of people for it--while maintaining 99% of the profits for record companies who don't do anything."

"Hillary Rosen is a very nice person who works for the intrests of the music labels, not the artists"

subscription = napster income paying BMI/ASCAP and the other hundred thousand licensing agency fees. This will never work because there is no central licensing agency for the entire planet and there never will be. I have already told the BMI directors this after they have been attempting to get me to sign contracts with them for over a year.

- Yeah that's 'cause you probably don't write any! Why don't you let Musimatch and all your sponsers advertise on your site for free and tell me if you still feel the same way.

Brian,

Most of the artists that have their music ripped off are not freely posting it on a public website such as DM. If DM required a fee for their services I would choose to either pay or not use their service. If an artist decides to allow their music to be for free, then so be it, but don't force them to give it for free. Think before you speak.

Yeah of course Ms. Rosen thinks that technology is good, as long as the RIAA controls it. That way they can keep charging everyone and stealing our $$$ just like they always have. Greedy ^&*&&*(

Chad,

The way I would like to see it work is that you will want to support the artist and buy their CDs and other merchandise after you hear them via Viral Marketing.

Chad,

So basically you are saying Artist should not even try to sell CDs on their site, is that correct?

What is the purpose of Viral Marketing? How would you support the artist, subscriptions fees? What will prevent the artist posting their music on another site for free and if they did why pay you a subscription fee.

Viral marketing works better with Non-Exclusive contracts do you not agree?.

i agree with one of the above posters, the RIAA want to have napster charge fees? screw that, I'll just use another program or download from the thousands of websites that offer free music, it cant be stopped, period! how many will pay? I certainly won't....
