Napster Daily Traffic Soars to a 92% Increase
Posted by Mike Darrah on July 31, 2000 at 11:27 AM   (printer friendly)

One thing that is certain since the recent court hearings on Napster, more people are using the service now then ever before.

According to Nielsen Media Research (Yes, the infamous Nielsen rating system) daily use of Napster has increased 92 percent, to a amazing 849,000 unique home visitors last Friday, covering more then three percent of all active users on the Internet.

Not only is usage skyrocketing, but downloads of the software have also doubled, reaching a estimated 22 percent of it’s audience online.

It makes you wonder if the RIAA really thought about what they were doing before going ahead with this lawsuit?

OF COURSE THERE ARE MORE USERS NOW!!! it makes perfect sense, if you give something international publicity... albeit bad publicity, as long as people know about it, (wich in my experience, they didnt previously) they will flock to be part of something like this

I think this serves as a great big "duh" to the RIAA.

One small "narf" for Napster, one giant "duh" for the RIAA.

As expected.

Last year I had a hard time seeing how the first Rio player would be successful considering the limited niche it was marketed to. The RIAA suing Diamond over it gave it the kind of press that very few new home electronic products get. We all know that the Rio ( which was effectively an American manufactured version of the MPMan) was a successful product that spawned many other MP3 players.

Napster had already established a very large user base. This lawsuit gives Napster the kind of press that could never be bought. I expect the user to continue to increase extremely rapidly as long as the threat of being shut down looms over Napster.

Is anyone in the least bit surprised? I mean, cmon now...Napster gets free press coverage all over the US therefore of course their traffic would increase.

Of Course

These stupid ass RIAA people keep on making noise about about Napster and other little things. Of course Napster trafic is going to increase. The RIAA needs to not worry about Napster, they need to worry about these bootleg Cd's and tapes that I can off the street, that's why less people buy from the store.

Scour doesn't stand a chance cause they have two big brothers after them RIAA.......and MPAA. That is big trouble. Those are the two biggest Mafia families in the country. They'll have no problem paying off judges.

I wonder how much of a traffic increase to the Internet overall this trial has created?

Three percent of the Internet traffic for one weekend has to be some sort of record, up there with that Cult's website that went on to catch a ride with the comet... no further comment needed on that one.

any press is good press, unless you're Jack-in-the-Box. Remember that mess a few years back?

lol, the dumbasses try to shutdown Napster, instead Napster gets a 92% increase in traffic and they didn't even shut it down. Those RIAA lawyers are really earning their money huh....

Well, if the RIAA intends to keep people away from sharing their music, they sure are going about it the wrong way. But we all knew this, right?
