Steal This Film Part II

The folks behind Steal This Film, an amazing, funny, enraging and inspiring documentary series about copyright and the Internet have just released part II of the series. I taught part one (about the PirateBay crackdown in Sweden and the founding of The Pirate Party) in my class last year, and it was one of the liveliest classes we had.
Part II is even better than part one -- it covers the technological and enforcement end of the copyright wars, and on the way that using the internet makes you a copier, and how copying puts you in legal jeopardy. Starting with Mark Getty's (Chairman of Getty Images) infamous statement that "Intellectual Property is the oil of the 21st century," the filmmakers note that oil always leads to oil-wars, and that these are vicious, ill-conceived and never end well. This leads them to explore the war on copying -- which ultimately becomes a war on the Internet and those of us who use it.
This installment includes punchy interviews with a lot of the US's leading copyfighters -- EFFers like Seth Schoen and Fred von Lohmann, Siva Vaidhyanathan, Eben Moglen, Aaron Swartz, Yochai Benkler, Rick Prelinger, as well as folks in the UK, Sweden and Bangalore. Interspersed with this is are smart historical perspectives, and a brief interview with MPAA chief Dan Glickman, who all but twirls his mustache in glee at the thought of punishing copiers. There's also some interesting material here from new artists who embrace copying, but I'm guessing that that's going to be the main theme of a future installment.
Steal This Film II is available as a P2P download (natch) in several formats, including HD, and opens with a stern warning encouraging you to share it as widely as possible. Link (Thanks, Robbo and everyone else who suggested this!) See also: Steal This Movie: documentary on Swedish piracy movement

For those folk (like me) who don't want to fool with the High Definition and/or DVD etc. being freely offered via BitTorrents,
parts of this are showing up on YouTube.
Here's the first 9 minutes or so:

Looks like it is very well produced!
(I would love to see this thing air on The Discovery and/or History channels, but fat chance since virtually ALL the TV networks are owned by the enemy. But, what the hey? YOU could download this, put it on BETA if need be, then take it to your local cable provider and have them put it on community access. HINT HINT!) |

Folks, after watching more of this I am now convinced that I am going to have someone download it and make a copy I can take to the public access channel in Knoxville Tn.
Unfortunately, the folk at stealthisfilm.com don't have the funds or inventory on hand to supply you with a tape or DVD themselves. (In fact, they ask you to "steal" it via BitTorrent as part of the point they are making.) So, I urge that we do so AND take it to our local community access station. (You may, or may not have to send an email to stealthisfilm.com in order to get a "permission" slip for community access to agree to air it, but that's just a minor detail.)
DO IT FOLKS! |

Make sure to use the film entitled PART II... (NOT part I because Part I has too many "infringed" clips from RIAA/MPAA owned sources.) |

Steal This Film Part 2 is much better (and more in line) with what I feel the "official" position of Boycott-RIAA has been all along than the first film they did (which had seemed to me to be more-so than less nothing much more than a promotion of The Pirate Bay and an advocation of complete copyright abolition.)
They did a MUCH better job this time!
Folks, even if you don't have the time/money/resources to help distribute "Steal This Movie II", I hope you will at least take the time to watch it.
(Yup, the whole thing appears to be available on YouTube now if like me you don't have the ability and drive-space to download the whole HD/DVD file.) |

(BTW, in the film, where the "Pirate Party" guy talks about being lambasted for using the term "pirate" to describe the party/movement
...I am one of those folk who directly lambasted him for use of the term - via our communications a couple years ago. lol.) |
