TunePrint – Audio Fingerprinting Algorithm?
Posted by Mike Darrah on August 28, 2000 at 11:31 PM   (printer friendly)

As quoted from the web site – “Tuneprint is an audio fingerprinting algorithm. It takes the unique 'fingerprint' of a sound clip, which can then be compared to a fingerprint database to get more information about the clip, like title and artist, lyrics, URLs, related music, copyright status, or almost anything else.”

“The fingerprint doesn't change even if the sound is compressed, converted to a different file format, broadcast over the radio, and so on.”

I do not currently have much more detail about this technology at all, but I did find it linked up on Slashdot.org, which made me quite curious about it. I will be in contact with this company to try to provide everyone a little bit more detail on this one in the near future.

In the mean time, I ask anyone with spare time and as curious about this post as I am to please go check out this web site and let everyone know what they think about this “TunePrint” technology.

Hm, interesting. They could be on to something. Like I've said before, technology can only be beaten w/better technology.

Hehe, reminds me of cddb on steroids. :)

I had this idea (not taking any credit here, it was very vague and I have no idea how it would be done of course), but just imagine if you could find the name of a song that you didn't know anything about besides how it went. Hum a few bars into your computer mic, process the data into a recognizable tune, then search the net! Of course, you'd probably get a ton of possible matches, but still I think it's a great (eventual) idea. Exactly what these people are going to use it for is beyond me, though. Probably tracking down those pesky "pirates" "stealing" music off that "Napster thing"
