RIAA Says CD Sales Are Up
Even though file-sharing applications like Napster and Scour Exchange have millions of registered users, the music business is still booming. Not only that, but the business is in fact on the rise. To top it all off, these statistics were released by our good friends at the Recording Industry Association Of America.
Shipments of CDs in the United States are up six percent, to an all-time high of 420 million units during the first half of this year. This puts CDs at 86% of the total music purchasing market.
Could this increase in CD sales be attributed to people "sampling" music on MP3 before they buy an album? The RIAA doesn't think so. They say the music sales are driven largely by a healthy market and the unprecedented success of several young artists.
"Despite the excitement felt by music lovers and record companies alike over the positive potential of the Internet, for the time-being, loyalty to the physical product remains as is evident by these midyear shipment numbers," said Hilary Rosen, president and CEO of the RIAA. "CDs will be around for a long time."
I have a feeling that digital music will be around for a long time too. You can quote me on that.

I guess they had to admit that they are making more money then ever at some point.
Considering the recent onslaught of media coverage that CD sales are doing extremely well, from various sources, they had to face the fact that they are making massive amounts of money still.

Sure, right.. the artists before this year must have just sucked huh and not comparible at all to any of this years artists?
The only difference is that people have found the ability to digitally distribute and sample music which promotes additional sales. The studies and figures are there, but the RIAA still cries foul play when these services they are taking to court are making them additional sales revenue.
I guess the RIAA truely is all about totally ripping the consumer off as much as possible.
We will see how well they stand against the 28 states which are now taking them to court. |

Watch out, people. They will inflate the price of CDs. They'll throw a copyright tax on it like a pack of cigarettes. |

Its only natural that music sales will rise year by year people.
If there wasn't illegal music all over the net, the rise in cd sales would've been much greater, i can guarantee. |

why is it natural that they would rise? More people? I really don't think the population increases that quickly. Maybe because of Britney Christina Moore-Simpson. Which goes to show, people can be stupider than we estimate. Damn, and I had hoped mp3s would get people to experiment with NEW music. Oh well

I'm not exactly sure what to think (aside from Hilary being a contradictory hypocrite). On one side, I'm being tugged by the feeling that sales being up is a good thing, because it makes the RIAA look even sillier in their quest to shut file-sharing down. On the other side is the gnawing feeling that if sales of the physical product are up, then it just means that the RIAA has more money to swindle from their artists and not as many people as we'd like are selling their music directly.
I think right now I'll go w/the one that makes Hilary look silly. :) |

I get your point, but I don't see the analogy. The high tax on cigarettes (which I think is out of control) is supposedly to offset the large amount of business smokers give to the medical industry.
Anyway, do we gladly pay an added expense to keep Napster open, thus admitting (incorrectly) that it's hurting sales, or refuse such a deal, claiming Napster is helping the industry enough? Hehe, perhaps the RIAA should be paying Napster for all its help. ;) |

The RIAA seems quite confused right now. All of the companies are scambling in circles and not coming up with any solutions. I love to watch 45 year old man wearing a $5000 suit, and makes me listen to crap they release, sweat his ass off, and contradict himself. They are being exposed for the me me me me, porche driving (nothing wrong with porches), caviar eating, prostitutes that they really are. I wish I could type a grin. |

I would like to see RIAA sales figures for the last 10 years. Anyone know where they can be seen? |

The RIAA doesn't believe that 'sampling' the music doesn't sell albums? First of all...I'm surprised that they looked past thier own pockets to even notice what's going on... Second...BULLS**T! I can personally say that I'll purchase an album that I like a couple songs from...but if I don't hear them, I'll never know if I like them or not. But God forbid that they give a nod to anyone...like they generated these booming sales all by themselves. God I'd love to hear what thier comments would be if sales plummeted suddenly..."awww, jeez...maybe our attitudes suck and our marketing stinks...maybe we should look to some new tactics" YEAH RIGHT! It would be more like "Those damned things like Napster and Scour are ruining our business!!! Let's sue them and see if we can drive out those demons!!!" UP YOUR A*SES RIAA!!!! |

To be honest, I have not bought a CD since I have discovered Napster.
I am really surprised that sales have gone up. Everyone I now has a CD burner and are making there own CDs
