Final Pumpkins Album Leaked Online
The Smashing Pumpkins announced earlier this year thier intent to break up. Now, with their last album completed, the Net is buzzing with reports that it is already leaked on the net!
But the major shocker is that people are saying that Pumpkin leader singer Billy Corgan started the Internet leak himself.
"Friends and Enemies Of Modern Music" (called FAEOMM for short) is the name of the upcoming album and online fans are saying that the newly found MP3s are the real deal. Alt.music.smash-pumpkins is alive with fan talk about the early release of the new music. The newsgroup also lists numerous FTP sites that already have all of the complete tracks to FAEOMM.
According to fan accounts, it was Corgan who sent the album to fans and friends and encouraged them to convert the music into MP3s. The band's label, Virgin Records, has made no comments on the matter.

XXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX SAT SEPT 09, 2000 12:25:39 ET XXXXX
DOWNLOADED: SMASHING PUMPKINS RELEASE 25 SONGS WITHOUT RECORD COMPANY; TRACKS TRADE ONLINE
The music industry was rocked on Friday when the SMASHING PUMPKINS released 25 new songs to
be distributed for free over the Internet, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.
The move marks the largest free music release ever by a band with such stature.
The band unleashed the unreleased tracks after VIRGIN RECORDS showed little interest in
the material. Rather than letting the music rot, the group went behind
their label's back to press 25 vinyl copies. It then asked recipients to release the music publicly via MP3 files.
On the quality of the music, one PUMPKINS fan decalred: "This release contains some of the best music this band has ever created.... This is one more example of the power of the Internet."
The files are already trading on web sites, FTPs, and NAPSTER.
Impacting.

Hmm, while I don't know the whole story, it sounds to me like the Pumpkins were required to release this album in order to fulfill their contractual obligations. Labels are notorious for giving very little promotion to lame-duck artists, so it appears the group has taken it upon themselves to promote it as much as they can. Whaddayou wanna bet that before long we're reading about a Virgin-v-Pumpkins lawsuit.
I've seen this lame-duck scenario too many times in the past. I'm curious to see how it'll fare for the Pumpkins, who, unlike most of their predecessors, have the benefit of .mp3 technology on the www. |

Is Billy smoking crack? These are just demos and isn't even close to being final "album" quality. It sure sounds like stuff tossed from the Machina sessions.
Why the hell didn't they release digital copies of these tracks himself instead of lowering the quality again through the vinyl pressing and distribution through so-called friends? Doesn't Billy believe in digital music? Doesn't he want the fans to have the decent quality tracks?
Why would any serious musician want such poor quality tracks distributed if this is indeed the last incarnation of these tracks we'll ever see?
I just don't understand it! |
