TRENT REZNOR SAYS "...this one's on me."
"The album, which became available for download just after 3 a.m. Eastern time on Monday, appears to represent the first time a superstar act has distributed an entire album without any opportunity for people to pay for it. Its release comes two months after the band issued the instrumental album Ghosts I-IV and allowed fans to obtain a portion of it for free or the entire recording for $5. Before that, the British rock act Radiohead broke with convention by offering its 2007 album, In Rainbows, online under a tip-jar-style setup in which people could name their own price including zero."

NIN might be doing the "indie thang" as a gimmick to get publicity...

But I'll give 'em a pass because it sounds like NIN truely gets it!

yes And Trent has been doing this for about 7 years or more... giving away music releasing songs behind the labels back :D and more!

Doesn't matter. I'm not even a NIN fan. May have heard something by accident, but they've been RIAA. I haven't checked my email, but my links should already be there.

At least I can listen to it in its entirety and see if the band or their new album appeals to me without risking a lawsuit.

You still have a better chance of getting killed in a car crash than you do of actually getting a lawsuit filed.

Especially in my neighborhood.

I was being sarcastic. I actually think an intellectual exercise in logic against the RIAA's usual line of bullshit would be immensely entertaining. They'd be forced to answer my questions, especially the ones I already know their answer to.

Set them up, let them spin, knock them down. Rinse. Repeat.

With just the kind of spontaneous publicity that most musicians need a record label for.

Sad to say, The Slip did not impress me. I really wanted it to and I might listen to it a few more times before I give up on it.

So far, I just don't get it. The dreadful drum machine, the muted distorted guitar tone without real edge, the keyboard tracks that sound like they were pitch shifted to slow them down, no real melodies...

Is it just because I'm an old guy? Did anyone like this album? If so, please elaborate because I've heard better at DMusic.

I liked it, and I'm an old guy LOL. ...but It is by far not the best and yes there are much better right at DMusic.com.

but I am a NiN fan have always been from back in the day so I'm a little biased. But that is the sound thats made him $ and I am sure will continue to. Its no "hurt" or "perfect drug".
but I do like it, would I have bought it? nope... but I haven't bought any RIAA music in what seems like 8 years, (haven't "stole" it either, just what I hear on the radio)

They seem to be doing it in a much more genuine way than Radiohead did with their last album. I'm no NiN fan, but kudos to them for doing this.

Alrighty then.

There's obviously an audience for it, even if I'm not in it. And I agree with Simon about motivation.
