Universal shares awarded damages

In a unique move on the part of a major label, Universal Music Group (UMG) announced that it will be sharing $25 million of the recently awarded $53.4 million dollars in damages from MP3.com with artists who had their works infringed upon.

While the decision to share the money is a welcome change in the industry, one has to really speculate why Universal decided to do this as there was no one forcing them to. Obviously, $25 million dollars is a lot of money for a label to give out without being forced too.

Perhaps UMG has seen the negative feedback from artists on other labels unpleased with the fact that the money paid to them from MP3.com never is going to reach the artists making the music which caused the lawsuit, and wants to show it's artists it appreciates them.

Considering the level of talent on the UMG label, and the potentially volatile situation surrounding the work for hire issue, one could speculate that the move to share the money with the artists is a sign that UMG is worried about some of it's artists jumping ship if they do not treat them well enough.

Whatever the case may be in the decision to share half of the $50 million dollar settlement (There were $3.4 million dollars in legal fees in the case) is a good sign of a major label recognizing and showing respect to the talent which is has signed on.

For the first time in a long time I'm actually happy about something being done by a record company...thumbs up to Universal. Let's hope they follow through with their announcement.

I wonder if all you folks who always lay the blame on the record companies for the fact that the artists have no money are actually privy to the books. The accounts. You know what I am saying here? This is the biggest bogus rumor mill this internet. All you bull shippers out here send me the proof. You can't get it can you so you will just wallow in your rumor mill. It makes me laugh. The computer geeks of this world live in their own little space, Why don't you ask an artist what they think about it. Ask Metallica. Ask Madonna
Ask someone who is real not your next door neighbor hood strummer who writes hoaky songs . Get real.

"Whatever the reason," I'm glad that the artists are being paid. I really don't feel sorry for them because most of have so much money anyway, but it is nice to see a record company to act like it has a heart.
