Rage Fans are Raging Mad
Rage Against the Machine fans are raging mad. Earlier this week, Napster users who had copies of Rage's new album, Renegades, on their hard drives were banned from the popular file swapping service. This motion was supposedly given the go ahead by the band and it's label, Sony Music.
But already, the tides are changing. On Thursday, Rage guitarist Tom Morello said the action to ban Napster users was a "horrible mistake" and the band has already ordered it to stop. In a statement, Morello said, "Rage Against the Machine would like to sincerely apologize to all of our fans who were kicked off of Napster for downloading Renegades."
The statement also gave new information that Rage was unaware of their record label's actions. "The move to take action against Rage fans was taken completely unilaterally by our new management. In their zeal to keep the record from getting out before the release date, they did not consult the band before instructing Sony Music Corp. to institute the Napster ban."
So far, Sony Music has no comment on the situation.

Once again, we see how the labels couldn't give a rat's ass about the wishes of their artists.
...and of course they have nothin' ta say; it's pretty hard ta speak when you've got'cher head up yer ass. |

To set the record straight:
(1) It was not Sony that gave the word on the ban. It was Rage's new management firm, Q Prime, which also, coincidentally represents ... METALLICA.
(2) As far as users getting back on, the article didn't mention that Tom Morello provided rage listeners with info about how to work around the ban, on the ratm website (www.ratm.com) |

Ya know it's funny, I was gonna say "labels/management," but it seemed redundant. ;) |

Rage Against the Machine obviously sees the downside in not sharing their music across programs like napster. its good that they recognize this.
as for the record label and management, they should consider the outcome of what they are enforcing before they actually enforce it.

why did Rage Against the Machine hire their new management (Q PRIME), if they knew they would regret it later?

This is straight BS. The way I see it, how will you know if you like the album if you can't hear it first. When you go to Best Buy and all the other popular music stores and listen to the album on headphones do they get penelized and banned from selling records??? |

i dont think that is the right mindset you should have. you should buy cds so that a band can stay around and continue making music as their first line of work.
mp3s contribute to this process by sharing a band's music to the public so that (supposedly) more people would buy their cd.
we want to show the industry that mp3s help the artists and labels instead of crippling it dont we?

That's bullshit man. I download songs on napster to see if I like the album or not, not to make illegal copies of their songs. I only download for my personnal use. Fuck Rage and Metallica. The future of music will be in the hands of napster or companies like them. They don't understand that and they will lost some fans for sure. |

What if Tom Morello and everyone on the band acctually wanted napster to ban people trading their songs, but instead of fucking up with their own image, they used their new management's? And if their agent is now the Metallica's one, i'd guess they really share the same thoughts of the mettalica band, only that they don't want their image as dirty... Come on guys.. they're the good guys... buy their CDs... they didn't want you banned ;) |

actually it's more like a miscommunication. as far as the label was concerned, it was the band who wanted this to happen. after all, it was their manager who went to sony and said "blah blah napster evil blah."
how was the label supposed to know it was the management acting independently of the band? |

Riiight. I'm bein' totally serieous, you're absolutely right, doob. It's ancillary that the labels are makin' the majority of the money. I feel the prime directive right now is to show that file sharing doesn't hurt sales.
Support your favorite artists, people, but at the same time, write your politicians asking them to help modify the laws! |

I was waiting for you guys to report on this. For months, I've seen dmusic laud fruitcake artists (i.e. The Offspring, Limp Bizkie) for facilitating the sale of digital music and not condemning Napster. It's about time a pioneering, talented band (albeit semi-defunct) came out and stood up for their own music and refused to be gluttons to their label's antics. Tom Morello has always been a voice of the disenfranchised and an important vehicle for admonishing the "establishment." I couldn't be happier that he has turned his attention to Napster. |

if they actually wanted to see users banned, they probably wouldn't have gone out of their way to tell fans how to get unbanned.
that would sort of defeat the purpose, ne pensez-vous pas?
unless they provided false information about unbanning ... muWaHAHA! ratm is evil! now all the ratm leechers have evil virii on their computer, contracted by following the istructions on the rage website!
tom morello is a leecher punishing genius! |
