FTC approves AOL-Time Warner Merger
Posted by Mike Darrah on December 14, 2000 at 12:13 PM   (printer friendly)

The Federal Trade Commission unanimously approved the proposed $111 billion merger between America Online Inc. and Time Warner Inc., with conditions set on "open access".

In a 5-0 vote, FTC commissioners decided today that the marriage of AOL-Time Warner was cleared through the FTC, creating one of the most powerful media companies that ever existed.

The "open access" conditions of the stated that Time Warner must allow at least one competitive non-affiliated cable, high speed ISP (Internet Service Provider) through the existing Time Warner cable system before AOL offers service through the system also.

Furthermore, the company must offer at least two other service providers through the service once AOL has it's high speed access available through Road Runner.

I am quite interested in seeing which alternatives become available, and if the pricing structure of the new services will be any less expensive. Being the owner of a Playstation 2 also, it make me curious to know who Sony may potentially approach now in the development of it's upcoming high speed digital content delivery service.

AOL-Time Warner now awaits one smaller final approval from the Federal Communications Commission in addition to the approval from the FTC before the deal is finalized and is 100% done.

AOL is not evil. It's really not as bad as you think. At least it keeps the people you can't stand in one spot, mostly away from the internet. :)

steve has a point, AOL is the gay guy you can let your girlfriend go shopping with when you don't want to go shopping. Just another guy you can trust her not to do anything with. But... AOLTV... AOL+Time Warner... I'll have to soon buy my cable television from AOL... this pisses me off. I predict revolution is near... because people WILL NOT STAND THIS CONGLOMERATION AND COMMERICAL ABUSE. FUCK YOU FTC AND FUCK YOUR STUPID IDEALS THAT HURT THE PUBLIC. DIE DIE DIE. sorry, but really, this can not be good.
