Dave Matthews Band Napster Feature
Posted by Mike Darrah on January 12, 2001 at 12:32 PM   (printer friendly)

In a first from a major label, the Dave Matthews Band's latest single "I did it", which was offered for free download starting last week will be spotlighted on Napster.

RCA and Bertlesmann have decided to set an example and perhaps a new trend by taking the single and putting on Napster for promotional purposes. For those unaware, RCA is a BMG owned label, and thus has decided to allow the promotion and sharing of the song on the Napster peer-to-peer file sharing network.

Bertlesmann (BMG) has serious interests in displaying the promotional capability of the service, and hopes to demonstrate the capacity to exist without disturbing traditional market sales figures with a recently announced agreement with CDNow, which is also operated under the ever growing Bertlesmann empire.

Every song from any major artist is already on Napster without permission, so who the hell cares? I'd just go to davematthews.com if I wanted a single lame promo single.

Why not just download the whole album and burn it yourself? Promote CD-R sales! BMG needs to get in the blank CD-R business!

it somewhat changes the "legal" things of the whole trading process. now they cant track you down and beat you to death with a toothbrush because you have a DMB song. ;)
