Pentaguard Hacks Government Sites
Posted by Heidi Chambers on January 22, 2001 at 7:32 PM   (printer friendly)

Right on the heels of the FBI catching pro-Napster user Pimpshiz, who allegedly hacked into over 200 websites and changed the sites to promote Napster, the security group Attrition.org announced that hackers have defaced 26 government Web sites in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia last week.

A group called Pentaguard took credit for the job and left a message on the attacked sites stating that their targets were useless because they did not contain pornography or MP3 files.

The following message was posted on The Alaskan Office for the Department of Interior's Web site. "...So, we sugest... make these fuckin sites usefull... they have bandwith, they have enough storing space... put warez on them, make a few free porn sites, fill them with mp3's... USE them..."

The recently attacked sites included the California State Assembly Republican Caucus, the U.S. National Cemetery Administration and the Alaska office of the U.S. Interior Department. In the past, the group has also attacked at least 53 other sites, including the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force and the Department of Treasury. Plus, Pentaguard has also defaced government sites in China, Kuwait, Romania, Georgia and Vietnam.

I don't know how everyone else feels, but personally I think that "we" as music enthusiasts are going to start to get a bad rap for all of this hacking non-sense.

We all know sites that have no porno are in fact useless, so this is all very understandable hacking!

Ya know, I'm not really that concerned w/any "bad rap" I as a music enthusiast gets from this. That would be like feeling embarrassed or ashamed for "people everywhere" because of the actions of 1. I think I'm more concerned that these vandals are maliciously altering or destroying other people's hard work and creation. I may agree w/some of their stances and take great entertainment value from their literacy, but their methods are destructive and hurtful, and I think this is a rightfully punishable act.
