Slow Music Sales Napster's Fault
Posted by Heidi Chambers on February 26, 2001 at 8:09 AM   (printer friendly)

According to data released by the Recording Industry Association of America, shipments of CD singles sank by 39 percent last year. Could that slump be blamed on a slowing economy? No. Obviously it is Napster's fault.

"Napster hurt record sales," said RIAA president Hilary Rosen, particularly pointing out the drop in the sales of singles.

On the other hand, Napster chief executive Hank Barry said the association is twisting the data to support the recording industry's claim that they have suffered "irreparable harm" at the hands of Napster users.

"In order to argue we've done irreparable harm, it would be great if there were some irreparable harm to show. We haven't seen a credible survey yet that suggests Napster is hurting CD sales," said Barry.

Last week, music executives rejected Napster's offer to settle a copyright infringement lawsuit. The file-swapping company offered $150 million annually for five years to Sony, Warner, BMG, EMI and Universal. Plus independent labels would also earn $50 million annually.

We'd be idiots if we paid for singles when downloading is free. It should be down more. More than 50% of people have Internet access now. We can't be stopped. Music is free.

The corporate fucks can get real jobs if they don't like it.

P.S.: This has nothing to do with a so-called slowing economy. The economy was fine last year.

what a useless post. was there a point in there?

..and by the way, music isn't even what they're making you pay for -- just the right to listen to it.

popups suck ass.

I can see how the sales of singles have gone down like the RIAA is saying. I mean 6 bux just to buy 1 song? Come on. People won't pay for that. They are lucky they still got people shelling out at least 15 bux for full albums. Might as well spend another 8 to 9 bucks for the rest of the songs than just the single.

TO dmusic: Please get rid of the popups. They are really annoying. Thank you.

Leave Napster alone. This is Amercia... Not Russia.. Let us enjoy our music. You charge too much in the sale of music on the shelf and most people can't afford your extremly high prices. We are not hurtin anyone or anything.. Don't be such a money hog. Think of others...

Singles are $2/$3 with 2 songs and 'maxi-singles' with more tracks are $6/$7

Yes, popups are annoying but they're about the only ads on the Net that still generate any sort of money. Those banners are pretty much free... and running a site still costs money.

"P.S.: This has nothing to do with a so-called slowing economy. The economy was fine last year."

eh? do you even pay attention to the stock market? It's a primary indicator of how the economy as a whole is doing. If you'd bother watching it, you'd realize that we did in fact see an economic slowdown last year.

P.S. - The FRB doesn't drop interest rates in the midst of a period of economic growth...simple economics.

dmusic's pop-up adds are extremely annoying, i don't give a flying fuck if it's a way to generate money for the site or not, they need to either find a better way to generate money that is not a major annoyance to the sites visitors, or go out of business, simple as that....

The Pop UPs are annoying, but if it's the only way to generate income for the site, then we can live with it....if it really bugs you do a websearch for anti popup software.....theres a bit around..

hmm. someone should look at the numbers on RIAA's site. they lost 39% in SINGLES sales. Hmm. Wait, no they didn't lose money. They just didn't get as MUCH money as last year. Hmm.. In fact - they only lost 2% of their total revenue. of course, saying "We lost 2% of our multi-billion dollar industry" probably doesn't have the same impact as this 39% number.

people who bitch about popups: turn off javascript, or get a popup blocker. This is for DMusic. The popups aren't there without reason.

If you Americans think you had it so bad, you should buy CD's over here in the UK. We currently pay the highest prices in the world for CD's (and just about everything else)and I am not surprise that sells of singles have gone down. So until the these greedy record companies stop acting like Stalin and stop being anti competitive and bring down prices, I will continue to download music for free. If they don't like it they can kiss my big XXXX.

Maybe the bad weather caused people not to be able to go to the stores. Maybe the RIAA can sue Mother Nature along with everybody else.

The pop-ups stink, but if that is how you need to keep the site running, have at it.

PRESS RELEASE - Janurary 23, 2001 - PRESS RELEASE

PUREMP3 HIT BY ONCOMING TRAIN
(DM-CALIFORNIA)

PureMP3, a popular web portal, was hit by an oncoming train yesterday as it was going to work. Viewers were shocked to see a spectacle where the website sat on the tracks of it's own free will, just waiting for the inevitable. This is the first recorded incident of a website suicide.

"I didn't think it could happen - it was just a website!" Said one witness.

A website, taking it's own life in a all-too known way, was projected by Professor Whosi Whatsit, an adjunct at the University of San Diego.

"More and more websites out there are dieing nowadays. Lots of them just die out, struggling in the hard market that is created nowadays. I could tell this was coming to PureMP3. I expect we will see an industry-wide movement to this effect." Whatsit relayed to us.

Jamuraa, the previous author of the site, lost interest in the site two months ago after a bout with the flu. At that time he decided "school was more important". Jamuraa could not be reached.

If I can go out and buy 50 blank cd's for $40 then why would i pay $15+ for one just because it is pre recorded? If those greedy and excessively stupid record exec. people would drop the price to something the average middle class working person wouldn't mind paying, than it would be easier to just go out and buy it as opposed to getting it from napster.

though I would like to add that this is only CD singles numbers....why would anybody buy singles?
Album sales have been steadily increasing by 20% a year for about 3 years..... prior ro that, Album sales were dropping bt 20% p/yr.
How does this show that napster is hurting the music industry? They don't do press releases about these numbers though...do they?
