RIAA Hires Help Against Napster
Think about this scenario: You are the recording industry. What do you do to try and kill off Napster for good? Hire well known Republicans from around the country, that's what.
The Recording Industry Association of America announced that former Montana Governor, Marc Racicot, will be added to its consulting team that already includes ex-Presidental nominee, Sen. Bob Dole. The move comes less than a week away before a California judge will decide if Napster Inc. can keep operating its file-swapping software.
"This debate over intellectual property has wide-ranging implications beyond just what is going on in the recording industry. This is a fundamental property right, and it has been for two centuries. Without the protection of private property for the last 200 years, we wouldn't have the progress in this country that we've had," said Racicot during a media briefing with Hilary Rosen.
"I'm not aware of too many court cases that have generated this much interest not only here, but around the world. This is something that is extremely important to the country," Racicot continued.
On February 12th, a three-judge panel for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals sided largely with the recording industry, stating a lower court's order for an injunction was warranted. On March 2nd, U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel will hold a separate hearing to determine terms of a modified injunction.

Hatch is Napster's biggest "fan"? Think again. He's just a politician... and one of the fathers of the DMCA. |
