Napster Filters Working...
Posted by Dave on March 14, 2001 at 8:21 AM   (printer friendly)

On Monday evening, Napster sent out a court document stating that the filters they have put in place are working, and that they are still improving the filtering.

(for the record, this IS the first time napster has shown they are actually doing something in favor of the courts)

Although many files are being blocked, common mispelt names are getting through, but there is currently a group of people working on that. While spelling 'Metalika' will give you some results, spelling changes will be slowly weeded out...

While many of the songs presented to the court didn't follow the guidelines for blocking which would make them invalid, over 45 000 have, and Hank Barry, Chief Executive of Napster, says that two thirds of the songs will be blocked by Wednesday evening...

(just because they're considered blocked, doesnt mean there are no ways around it)

To combat mis-spelt words, Napster has contacted companies such as Gracenote, and NetPD. (NetPD helped Dr. Dre and Metallica during their lawsuits).

With all of these songs being blocked, a new site, http://www.napcameback.com, has emerged with a special download that will help you code your files automaticlly, thereby making them harder to block. What does it do exactly? It changes your file names so the first letter is at the back... huh?

Suppose your file is Offspring... It would take the g, and move it to the4 front... Causing goffsprin to be seen... (simple as pie)

NapCameBack realizes that sooner or later Napster will figure out how to overcome their coding, but as you read this, the guys over at NapCameBack are making new and better codes so the files wont be blocked.

Napster has alot of files to block, and NapCameBack wont be making it easier....

Now dont get me wrong, I love Napster, but I'm all for NapCameBack...

Any comments?

This won't really work on lots of files, for instance:

(the ataris) - I won't spend another night alone.mp3

would become e(the ataris) - I won't spend another night alone.mp3

Thus the most of the keywords remain intact.

...er, I meant

(the ataris) - I won't spend another night alone.mp3

would become

e(the ataris) - I won't spend another night alon.mp3

pohsib: The encryption algorythm changes each time you use the programme so the way the song name was scrambled before wont be the same way it is scrambled now. It doesnt matter if key words are intact .. Napster wont be searching for keywords .. just specific song names. If they then block the encrypted file name, you can use the programme to encrypt them differently. Personally I dont see the probelm with writing my own VB macro to change the file names .. but I doubt if people would want to use my .VBS themselves .. what with [k]ournicova and that shit. ;)

Dammit .. I am not anonumous >:[

anyhow .. I heard that Aimster have pulled their pig encoder from their site ( http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/17598.html ) so it shouldn't be long before thenapcameback does the same. Companies like pulsenewmedia are making it nearly impossible for Napster to fight its losing battle.

why bother with this renaming song shit? why even bother with napster if you cant use it the way it was? You'd really take the time to remane all you files just so you can download songs off of napster? you people have far too much time on your hands. what will you do when they start charging come July? LOL. this is just too funny instead of moving on to better P2P you'd stick with a dead horse such as napster? shawn fanning might as well be sleeping with Hilory Rosen at this point. Is it really worth it?

Why not use mIRC instead? You can chat and download more shit than just mp3's there...

"Suppose your file is Offspring... It would take the g, and move it to the4 front... Causing goffsprin to be seen... (simple as pie)"

heh.

so simple, you got it wrong. ("offspring" would become "ffspringo" NOT "goffsprin").

OpenNap (Music City) is probably the best alternative out there. I doubt P2P without a central server will ever become successful. It always bottlenecks due to the slowest people on the network. However, I think central servers set outside of the US will come very successful. However, like somebody said, renaming your files is a hassle and takes too much of one's time. It's just as easy to use another P2P network like Music City than to rename your files. Napster will start charging this July.

In The Netherlands the filter doesn't work. What's the problem? (well, I don't think it IS a problem, but maybe for the artists...)
Maybe the filter only works in the USA>

ok here are some replies to messages stated above:

1. IRC chats are ok but half the tiem you have to wait for 20 people to get off queues befor its your turn

2. like logic said they willput the servers outside of the US or else everything will suck just like gnutella
and tripnosis

3. napster is a dying horse but im stayign ewith it just becaue i cant download metallica and that shit dont mean i cant download any other music

Actually, I think the coding works on individual works, i.e. "(the ataris) - I won't spend another night alone.mp3" would become "(het tarisa) - I on'tw pends nothera ightn lonea.mp3". The parentheses and apostrophe might mess things up; I'm not sure.

Have any of you seen the CatNap Proxy. Its way cool. Check it out: http://www.geocities.com/catnaproxy/

I think it does a better job than NapCameBack.

Why not stop trying to find better, more creative ways to steal music, and just go out and buy the songs. You know, pay the artists for thier work? Novel idea.

doobybrain

because its generally harder to find and compare the files.

i hate thinking so much when searching for songs and this is definitely going to make me think...or at least push the 'backspace' button alot. anyway, i rather people NOT use programs like this because it just makes something thats supposed to be simple, to be complicated.
i'm all for keeping napster-like services alive, but whats the point if they are gonna start charging anyway?

(sarcasm) I'm still able to download Britney Spears in Denmark. THAT is good news. ;) Well, If they filter my britney I guess that I have to start using a opennap server.

Heh, I'm using audiognome right now and it says I have access to 60,000 gigs of non-Napster mp3s. Go figure.

why do people insist on using one of napster's servers? most of the opennap servers have even more people on them at one time than the napster servers. the musiccity server i was on today had 25,000 people on it. all the files you can get on napster's servers are there also of course. all you need is napigator.

What the hell is with all this napster hype??? It is definately an easy program to trade songs with, but there have been progams out there to do that before napster and there will be many more napsteroids to come.... Mirc is an awesome one available that you can trade EVERYTHING on... Napster can gladly go the way of the dino if they wanna make us pay. Good luck getting a penny from me.... Long live free trade! Just let em try and stop us.

the filter doesnt seem to be very effective, a search for music from britney and metallica returned 100s of files...

MusicCity _is_ great, but it's centralized numbers are slightly deceiving. The Napster servers still draw multiples more users, but the amounts seen by us are fragmented because of its numerous but also fragmented servers. MusicCity still doesn't have the same diversity, but I'm hopin' that word of mouth and time make it better. :)

Anon: The napster hype is because the Napster court case is the first of its kind. It will set precedents. You say IRC is such a good alternative, but that can be shut down too .. its not untouchable (eg ISPs could could shut down their IRC servers in a flash or control it more). I like Napster cause it is easy to use, I preferred Scour but ho hum. I dont want to have to put up with w@r3z kiddies and cyb3r wankers on mirc, just like people who use mirc have no desire to go poking about on news groups for their tunes. File swapping will never be stopped - I think moving the servers to Anguilla or something (like hushmail did to get round encryption laws) is the best idea. Cant wait for OpenNAP

This cracks me up. The people that claim they want Napster to stay around are contributing towards getting Napster shut down completely. Techniquest that are being described here and "Napcameback" are just giving more fuel to the RIAA/Hilary Rosen and crew to pursue everybody distributing mp3's.

I think people should stop buyng cd's the music industry is so dum either they lower prices or we stop buying if your with me don't buy another cd and spread the word. I think 12-18$ is too much to pay for one cd.
