TVT Records vs. MP3.com
Recent developments in MP3.com's ongoing troubled court cases have a judge ordering the music mega-site to pay $300,000 in damages to an independent record label for copyright infringement. Privately owned Tee Vee Toons Records claimed that MP3.com's Instant Listening service violated TVT copyrights by making TVT songs available to Net surfers for listening online.
"We prevailed. If they're going to be good corporate citizens going forward, they should learn to respect intellectual property. We're pleased we resolved this ... issue," said TVT founder Steve Gottlieb.
On the other side, MP3.com's Greg Wilfahrt said TVT had been asking for over $8 million in damages to begin with, and the $300,000 award showed the jury was unconvinced by TVT's argument. With the jury awarding TVT such a small fraction of what they originally asked for, MP3.com executives are hoping the verdict will deter other copyright holders from suing.
Even though both sides claimed victory, MP3.com said it would appeal.

from CNet:
"Jurors who on Friday ordered online music provider MP3.com to pay nearly $300,000 to a record label for copyright infringement told the trial judge that they checked the math and discovered they made a mistake: What they really meant was $3 million, the judge said Monday."
