Napster is Overblocking
Posted by Heidi Chambers on April 27, 2001 at 12:35 PM   (printer friendly)

Fans of Napster are noticing that it is getting harder and harder to find their favorite songs on the popular file-swapping service. Not only are today's popular and well known songs becoming a hard to find comodity, but so are lesser known songs. The reason for this: overblocking.

In a statement posted Thursday on the Napster Web site, the company says the problem stems from their filtering efforts. Their most recent efforts to comply with a judge's order to remove copyrighted songs has the service blocking common words in the English language. This includes taking material that no one has asked to have removed, like indie music, concert recordings, etc.

The following is Napster's official statement:

Napster is continuing to comply with the District Court’s injunction and to prevent the record companies from shutting down file sharing. In the process of doing so, we have implemented a range of filters designed to remove from the Napster service all copyrighted works for which we have received notice. We have recently enhanced those filters in an effort to screen out the wide range of variations in artist name and song title that result in noticed works continuing to appear on the Napster index. That, in turn, has unfortunately caused substantial additional "overblocking,” the unintentional removal of otherwise authorized works, for which we apologize to our users and artists. We will continue to refine our filters in an effort to avoid overblocking to the extent possible.

While many of the variations in artist and title names are the natural result of individuals naming their own files, some of the variations are deliberate attempts to evade the filters and share material over the Napster service that would otherwise be blocked. Napster’s terms of service prohibit the use of evasive measures such as pig latin, napcameback, napsterdecoder and otherwise deliberately altering file names in order to evade Napster's filters. Users found to be employing such evasive techniques will receive a warning and those who continue to share such files will be blocked from using the Napster service. This determination is based on an examination of the file names the user is making available to the Napster index.

Thank you for your continuing support. Napster is making significant strides in the development of our new service. Look for future announcements in this space.

This comes as no surprise to me. The RIAA will be truly happy only when/if Napster shuts down, even if it means Napster blocking out commonly used words. The RIAA doesn't care who's toes they step on. They're only interested in getting their way.

As an example of how bad this overblocking is: as of this morning, any search with the word "a" in it will immediately return with zero results.

hell everything I searched came up 0 results. What's bad is that I decided to try to share all 5000+ of my songs. Only 40 or so were shared. I don't even know what songs were shared. I have now un-installed Napster. Good bye I say!!

The Music Industry realizes that over the years it has not been up to par with proper marketing techniques. Jealousy rears its ugly head in this battle with Napster. A great marketing tool should be applauded not stepped on and squashed like a bug. I have no problem with a "SMALL" monthly fee.

hey, napster should stay on the computer. why not destroy the radio, we can also get songs off of that?

I buy records on vinyl, so napster is good so that i can find records i like and if i realy like them and am going to listen to them a lot I go and buy them on vinyl.

Yeh i can cut them on cd but i don't dj with cd's i dj with vinyl,, i could buy a dub plate cutter but its a bit out of my price range.

Also napster has got me listening to different types of music, since before I started using napster I was listening to very commercial music, but now I listen to a wide range of music a lot of which isn't very commerical.
But I don't think the record companies want this to happen either.

the more of us that switch to gnutella based software the easier it will be to download so instead of crying over napster's demise just do what I did, get bear share or whatever program you prefer and begin sticking it to the giant record companies by sharing with Gnutella ....... remember there is almost nothing they can do to stop this type of file sharing short of trying to sue every single person with this software

Overblocking? MSNBC.com ran a story a few days ago with a screen shot of napster, a search query for "beatles" and the search window saying "none found"... eek ;-)

cmon you guys, get smart. forget filters, and mourning napster... it isnt dead. only the napster servers are dead. connect your napster program to an unfiltered server using napigator.com. also any gnutella program- like the one at bearshare.com does the job fine...
why all the mourning?

Bearshare has spyware in it and the searches and downloads are so slooooowwww. The best alternative was connecting to the
MusicCity servers with WinMX or Audiognome. But since MusicCity has come up with Morpheus (a KaZaA clone) these servers are no good anymore.
Are there any good OpenNap Servers left?? It gives me a hard time to get what I want. It used to be so easy.....

dont worry about being indebted, here's how: go to napigator.com, download and install it. then click start, programs, napigator, standalone. itll open up a window with a list of servers (these are opennap, or unfiltered servers). click on one of them, and itll open your napster program, connected to THAT server. you wont have to misspell anything... good luck.

God dammit people! Download Limewire or Bearshare and share with Gnutella! It's not that hard at all and if you're on a fast connection, even better 'cause then you can actively connect to gnutella and share... dialup users, wait for Bearshare 3.0 or connect to just one or two gnutella servents... My #1 client's gnucleus and I love it... been using it since 1.0..... take your pick everyone! the RIAA can't stop us now...

The only one that got screwed is the RIAA. Why? Sure we can't use Napster as we used to, but now if we use Gnutella networks the RIAA can't do much to control us. So I say... ditch Napster and long live Gnutella!

USE NAPSTER! SHOW SUPPORT!
anyone who leaves napster for no VALID reason is a WUSS. If we continue to show support, it will live! it is the most stable software, and I use it plenty.

To the other anonymous person who said 'change the names', do you realise how STUPID an idea that is?

It's hard enough to find a standard for song names as it is, without having to resort to searching for silly variants. There's enough damn bad spelling on that program already without needing to add to it. Nothing annoys me more than this.

Changing the names of your songs just makes it even harder to find songs.

I honestly think that this is bullshit. why the fuck would they close down one of the best advertisment programs. not everyone has a fucken burner. these things cost money you know. anyway the hell with napster. BEARSHARE BEARSHARE BEARSHARE

I believe that the ultimate loser in all this will be the RIAA,untill this happened, I would use Napstar as a sampling station and if I liked anything I would usually buy the Cd .Now I just borrow and burn.No more Mr Nice Guy!!!!

It's pure and simple.
Since the ENGLISH language only consists of a few but famous titles and names, there goes everything from unCommercial to Commercial.

For example, it's not hard to see that filtering out LOVE or FOR YOU would have a 100% impact on all the love songs out on any sharing network.

So with this simple fact in mind it's not possible to create any kind of filter.

Personally the only word that should be filtered out on any sharing network is "Metallica". After all these faggots have nothing to gain from destroying what the world has finally learned. "TO SHARE".

Sharing is Caring... Mr.TerranBlood

I think that the Napster will live forever in the "history"... this P2P program has started a whole new area of information sharing / broadcasting. Therefore Napster might be "killed" by the bad guys, but it will remain in the memories of the world and new "ways" to do it Napster like will evolve... yes, the currently alternatives are not perfect... yet... but evolution and support will help them too... so remember Napster, but do switch to the Next Generation - either Bearshare or something else just like it - what I think we need as a next step could the possiblity to make "server info public" or some kind of "ratio" control, where I could say "I will share 10MB with you if you get me this file". This way it would be easier to find out WHAT to share and with WHO - ofcause the "ratio" thing should just be an option, but it would also increase the amount of files shared, because suddently people would be sure to gain files from others instead of "uploading" a lot, but getting nothing in return.

Well that's just my thoughts...

Napster... you did REALLY good for a LOOOOONG time!

So Long and Thanks for All the Fish... you showed the world the NEW way! Now step aside and prepare for the Next Generation.

Napster is going the way of the Betamax... And sadly similar to Betamax, it may not even live much in history, with exception of a few trivial mentions of legal precedents set. But the software is not as important as the revolution is has brought.
