Napster Takes a Breath
Posted by Heidi Chambers on April 28, 2001 at 12:43 PM   (printer friendly)

Just after Napster began tighting its grip on filtering songs from their music service, Judge Marilyn Patel issued a memorandum stating that the music industry, not Napster, is responsible for tracking down specific file names used to identify copyrighted songs.

Napster's most recent efforts to block copyrighted songs had the service blocking common words in the English language. But now with Judge Patel's new memorandum, the file-swapping program seems to be no long responsible for blocking altered MP3 file names, like Janet Jaxson instead of Janet Jackson, unless the artist's music label specifically identify it.

Patel also added that A.J. Nichols, a technical expert with over 25 years of experience in the development of hardware and software products, is preparing a report on possible ways to improve Napster's filtering system in the future.

But this doesn't mean they will stop filtering the most common spellings & renames. At least for now, they probably don't need to do much more than what they've been doing.

"Fab Four" wasn't filtered Thursday, but thanks to an article that pointed out many people renamed "Beatles" to "Fab Four", it's now been filtered. The game continues. ;)

At this point I consider Napster dead. Since MusicCity left OpenNap, I have no further use of the software. I un-installed it a few days ago. Goodbye Napster, Hello Morpheus :)

I don't know why everyone is so pissed off by Napster being fucked. Two very good alternatives - Rapigator and Audiogalaxy satellite have all the songs I want... Ok, I only ONCE came across file blocking on Audiogalaxy.. that was something by The Beatles. Apart from that, there have been no problems. Anyway - Napster doesn't have a resume function so it SUCKS.

I think this is all fucking bullshit. Who gives a damn if people are sharing music. The bands, and record companies are just pissed off because they are losing a few fucking dollars... as if they dont have enough already. -- Here's a different perspective for mettalica....which do you prefer? people trading good music, or people trading porn and other sick shit. FUCK THE GOVERNMENT AND METTALICA TOO.

why do they need "Nichols" to help Napster make better filters if the burden is on the RIAA to identify songs?? Sounds like no one knows what they are talking about...

Yep, you're right. CD's are too expensive, and music sharing is better than porn sharing.
