Another Free Operating System: NewOS?
Posted by Miikka Samuel Luotio on May 23, 2001 at 6:52 AM   (printer friendly)

An ex-beOS kernel engineer has made his own free operating system from scratch!

"Is the world ready for yet another Operating System? Travis Geiselbrecht, an ex-BeOS kernel engineer, seems to think so. He is actually the one who wrote the Linux ext2 filesystem add-on for BeOS. Recently he put up on his web site his personal Operating System, NewOS, with full source code, which was written from scratch. Currently runs on x86 and the Sega Dreamcast but he is planning ports for Alpha, SGI and Sun Blade machines in the near future."

Y'know, what is it with people that they can NOT for the life of them name an OS creatively? MacOS, OS2, NewOS... jesus, people.

Still, wonder how stable it is? Could be fun to play with...

Write extensive code for years straight and see how creative you are at naming things ;). after you have assigned an uncountable amount of practicle variable names to an uncountable amount of variables in a manner that will allow them to be easily remembered; after you've written so much code that you have an algo for brushing your teeth; after.. ah, well you get the idea.

beOS is a great os, it's just not as much as it could be. perhaps this newOS is something worth looking at. with it being the first release, i wouldn't expect anything wonderful.

even if it does suck, this guy wrote his own operating system, and that in itself is just crazy.

This is a bit of a moot story at this point in time. This is not really an 'OS' yet, per se, but some academic fun being had by Travis Geiselbrecht.

I mean, look [taken from website]:

"NewOS is NOT a desktop replacement, Windows killer, or even useful. It may later grow into something that someone may use to get things done, but it probably wont."

So before anyone comments on whether or not its useful, consider that the author himself recognizes it as more of an academic project than a desire to build a new OS for users. And as for OSes along those lines, there exists hundreds, if not thousands. Not much of a noteworthy story unless you're a coder who is excited at the idea of object-oriented filesystem layers and high-performance TCP/IP stacks. =)

Of all the projects out there to start a new operating system that isn't bogged down with 1980s technology at the core, I think AtheOS http://www.atheos.cx is the most advanced at this stage. It is worth looking into if you have tried BeOS (which is still wonderful, btw) and the other good OSes out there and feel like experimenting.

BeOS is inDd free. It has some limits, but can be overcome. There's a "beef-up" comercial version, though, but no real need for that.

how creative is it to name a window manager: windows?

doubleglock
Date: May 24, 2001 @ 7:19 AM
well, "windows" is more creative than "window manager OS"......

computerologist

it seems to me that there are so many people bitching about windows and how much they hate it...but when a new OS comes out..if doesn't function like windows they say it sucks...i mean honestly....what do you want in an OS?
ans as far as the naming goes..why does it have to be creative...the are prgrammers...not poets....would it make you feel better having an OS named ...spraklehexidecroseytree....i mean c'mon..all i want is for it to be funtional and semi-stable...they can name blank for all i care :)

i run atheos on a partition and its great to experiment with. if you get on their dev mailing list youll be flooded with interesting emails on all sorts of topics concerning atheos. also i have v2os on diskette, (as it is a diskless os).. its cool too, although it has no tcp/ip stack, but it loads completely into memory and can handle single tasking for now. if youre really interested in os dev, then v2os is a very good project to get involved in.

oh ya, and QNX is another great os, its not open source, but you can get a free copy of it for personal use. http://www.qnx.com

filmrice, you asked why he did it, now look at every single wp, or design you have ever created and ask yourself why you did that?
Can you really be so dense as to ask why someone would do something, does the reason why he did it concern you in anyway, the fact is he did and its done, and it takes one HELL of a person to put that much time and aggrivation into doing something he loves.

Dont be anyones slogan, you are your own poetry
