RIAA Wants Background Checks on CD-RW Buyers
Posted by Seve on May 12, 2002 at 12:23 PM   (printer friendly)

Washington DC - The RIAA is lobbying for vendors of CD-RW drives to conduct background checks and require a 3 day waiting period before the drive can be sold.

The extensive background check would include cross referencing credit card numbers with local merchants sales logs looking for purchases of dual-cassette decks between the years of 1980 and 1987. It would also include checking for installation of file sharing software, knowledge of the Internet, and the ability to hum. Any of which would bar the purchaser from receiving his drive.

"A CD-RW can be a dangerous weapon when it falls into the wrong hands," said RIAA President Hilary Rosen, "You wouldn't sell a gun to a convicted felon and you shouldn't sell a CD-RW drive to a Gnutella user. The 3 day waiting period gives us time to verify that no copyrighted material is on the purchasers hard drive and to make sure they have a membership in the Columbia House CD club."

Current owners of CD-RW drives would be required to obtain a license for use of the drive or face stiff fines. Licenses could be obtained by enrollment at a local RIAA Education Camp where the horrors of copyright violation would be instilled with the use of electro-shock therapy.

"I was alarmed when I heard that children had the ability to burn CDs right on their computers," said Senator Strom Thurmond, "We've tried to educate parents on the dangers of children playing with fire, and now these death merchants sell them that ability in a shiny metal box." Other Senators voiced their concerns about the possible violations of privacy in the proposed legislation, but since it was called the Copyright Patriotism Act they are unable to oppose it.

"The RIAA has gone too far this time. There are uses for CD-RW drives that don't violate RIAA copyrights like burning multiple copies of Microsoft Office for friends and neighbors," said Matthew Sodor an opponent of the legislation.

or is that whole thing fake? If so then like Avaksi said this it's a very realistic thing that could happen to us. If the cdcpta wasn't ever conceived then I guess that this article would've been much more obvious as a scary joke

Who wrote this originally? Where did Seve find it, or did he write it? It's distubing ... not enough electro-shock therapy.

I wouldn't put this too far past the 3rd RIAACH Nazis.

This is unbelieveable. I had wrote about the CBDPTA before but this is crazy. Anyone who knows about the internet? Gee why don't we just stop the making of CD burners. I don't have to go to a store to buy a CD Burner. I am definetly not going to join any club that relates at all to pro-RIAA activity just to get one. What gives the RIAA the right to regulate CD burners when that's not all they are used for. These senators are running wild trying to pass outrageous bills that are immposible in real life.

Hail Mp3!!!

This HAS to be in jest. How can anyone be that much of a moron?

If not a joke, Hilary Rosen must be the most lame person on the face of this earth today.
Are we in America? Did I miss something about when I learned the word "FREEDOM"?

Gawd, people, can we go after the REAL criminals in this world and leave the kids alone!?
That "Columbia House" reference is what tips off probable joke.

Everyone knows what a SCAM that place runs. ( for those that DON'T know.... Columbia House offers a contract.
They sell you 12 videos, tapes, or CD's for a penny.
The catch? You purchase three more in the next three years. Sounds great.
Then after approx. one year, they mis-bill , either for something returned, not received, or double bill you.
...and they don't always credit all payments!

So....they STOP sending you the monthly offers, insisting that you cannot buy another item until you pay up what you DON'T owe!
So, of course, you can't fulfill your membership contract... because you do not have the monthly offers sent to you to pick from, and even if you did, they wouldn't send anything until you paid for their scam bill.
They WILL not let you fulfill your contract so they can find a reason to say you broke your part of the contract.
You contact them by mail, phone, etc, and let them know you are not paying for something you do not owe. No recognition of your complaint.
This goes on for a few monthes, and then ...
SURPRISE! You are billed in FULL for all 12 FREE tapes/videos/CDs !
Contract says you have two more years to fulfill this obligation. Their Billing department obviously could care less that they broke the contract and insist you pay up now for your FREE enrollment package at higher prices than you would find online or retail.)

Now....as far as owning a CD burner.

Simple minded people like Ha-Ha-Hilary wouldn't understand that their are new upcoming musicians that use this item to create their own CD's to sell at their gig's. How do I know? Because I COPY them for my own son! So sue me for burning a CD. I am a criminal. My son paid hundred's for a master CD at a recording studio. He purchases the blank CD's, labeling material, and cover paper. We work HARD to burn dozens of copies of his original music (His OWN composition and lyrics) and make covers and labels to sell them for a few busks to fans in the clubs he plays in.
Yes, Hilary, you basket-case-close-minded-moron, there are other reasons to own a CD burner or to purchase writable CD's!

Do you have any idea how many fresh, new, musician's do this?

You will be very lucky if you get through this one without SOMEONE trying to SLAP some common sense into you!

I am going to the search engines to see what other idiotic things are posted that you may have said to make a fool of yourself in public.

I am sure you must be an advocate of book-burning, no prayer in schools, burning the rain forests, banning guns, hate guys with long hair and earrings, despise gays and lesbians, and think your religion is the only one God acknowledges.
True, we have the freedom to speak our minds, that's for sure....but let's keep it geared to personal opinions, not trying to run the world.

again...YOU , my dear, are an IDIOT! But, I give you that freedom....

Big Brother is watching you...

Anyways, this might happen. I mean, this is nothing compared to the PATRIOT Act. So now that we dont have half of the 1st, plus all of the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Amendments, whats to stop them from doing background checks? All I can say is that I'm glad that I have mine. And for everyone else out there, go to Canada. After all, thats where you're supposed to get your prescription drugs, your illicit drugs, and your cuban cigars, anyways. Plus, you can get free health care if you're good at that kinda thing. Now you just go up for your CD-RW Drives too. Another reason that Canada kicks America's ass.
