NBC Tries the Honest Approach
NEW YORK (AP) -- The top networks are suffering through a lackluster fall season partly because "some of the programming just sucked," NBC's entertainment chief said on Tuesday.
NBC's Jeff Zucker, who has already canned two high-profile new series, said while networks question some of Nielsen Media Research's numbers this year, TV executives need also look in the mirror.
"Our programming is not that good and the Nielsen sample is bad. End of story," said Zucker, speaking to the International Radio & Television Society Foundation.

Gee, what happens if telling the truth spreads to other forms of entertainment -- like the recording industry?

When I read that article earlier, I noticed that they said they weren't getting the younger male audience. Don't worry, NBC. I got your back. I watch Friends, Will & Grace, Scrubs, ED, and American Dreams every week no matter how much I have going on. I hope my shows don't get canceled. |

If there shows are doing so poorly then why is there a need for broadcast flags? |

I'm surprised NBC didn't blame folks TiVo-ing shows then uploading them to p2p networks. TV execs should be THRILLED that someone is willing to expend the time & bandwidth to share their programming over the Internet.
Oh, BTW, if you record TV & skip the commercials, you're "stealing". ;^)
(no lie, some TV network schmuck said something to this effect) |

Carlton: The incident you are fering to was when ReplayTV was sued for includeing a 30-sec-skip button for going past adverts. TV reps claimed viewers were in an informal but legally binding contract to watch the adverts. One gave the famous quote "there is some tolarance for bathroom breaks". |

It is true about the commercials though. Those pay the bills for these network guys. I love the commercials. They give you a chance to discuss the program without missing anything, you can go to the bathroom, and if the show really sucks you can watch the commercials and discuss them during the program.
I wouldn't even mind having to sit through commercials on recorded shows if it meant that I could download them without hassle and in at least VCD quality. |

"some of the programming just sucked"
Bravo, hit the nail right on the head. Once the problem is identified the path to the solution becomes easier. If only other industries could learn the same humilty and honesty. I bet with NBC taking an honest appraisal of themselves like that, they are bound to solve their problem.
Quite unlike the recording industry, who instead of realizing that their products suck, they see the consumers as the problem. Now, how to fix the consumer so they keep "consuming", or at the very least get their money? Ahh, sue 'em all!!!!

NBC should stick to what they do best, The West Wing, Will and Grace, and the Law and Order franchise. Coupling wasn't anywhere near as innovative as other sitcoms (really, who was their test market for that stinker?) and The Lyon's Den was too Byzantine for most audiences.
Fortunately, tv stations know how to own up to their mistakes, by cutting the weak shows from the herd and killing them. The music industry prefers to slowly bleed it's unprofitable ones to death and blame everyone else for artists that clearly have no talent. |

I don't know Jeff Zucker, but I say..
right on man!
You know, we all get so used to BS that when someone just comes out and tells the truth, we get floored.
I have a friend who is a neurosurgeon, who once, in a medical narrative, wrote,
"Frankly, I don't have a clue what is wrong with this patient."
You know what is so weird to me,
when you hear a really truthful statement, or at least when I do, I tend to start laughing, not because it is really funny...but out of relief that finally, someone had the chutzpah to say the emperor has no clothes.
Good for you Jeff....
"And the truth shall set them free..."
..now if Cary would just try that.... |

Kudos to NBC for their honesty. Change (for the better) begins when people can be honest with themselves.
Why hasn't the RIAA learned this yet? |

The reason why the RIAA and (other big biz media for that mater) have not learned this is that they are in it for the $$$ and not to please the consumer.
And don't worry, NBC ain't gonna all of a sudden be that much better. This was just PR to cover the asses of some program directors who were in hot water over poor ratings.
