I have downloaded a file. It says something about DRM and I have no idea what to do. I have searched everywhere for it. It will not play this file on anything. Is there a way that you guys know that could help me be able to watch this movie and not have to pay? Please help.

Vague inquery. Specify format? If you can play it, you can break it. If you cant play it, you probably cant do anything.

If its a WMA file, serves you right for downloading a format produced by the Beast.

"If its a WMA file, serves you right for downloading a format produced by the Beast."

You can rip from Windows Media Audio Format (.WMA) files. Use winamp's Disk Writer plugin to rip from the WMA file, and most of the time (for me at least) it rips the music into a .wav file.

It says it's an AVI video. But it will not play. I have been reading about it and they say they put DRM into files so you cannot illegaly "get" them. You have to pay for a liscense in my case to watch it for however many days you bought it. If anyone know I would really like to watch this movie.

AVI file? There are no protection systems for those. It would be all but impossible to make one. Cant be a DRM problem. Are you sure its not a WMV? Windows often uses the same icon for both and hides the extension. If it is an AVI, you probably have a codec problem. If WMV, you probably cant play it. You could try the utility FreeMe, but I doupt it will work. WMV encryption has been broken, but it can only be decrypted on the computer with the license key.

All I know is that is says It's an AVI file. Nothing else. When I was in the middle of downloading it I tried to preview what was already downloaded and it said something about DRM and that i need to contact the provider to get the liscense. Now that it is downloaded it will not play anything. When I play it in Divx, Realone, Windows Meadia Player, or Winamp. They all say there is a problem and they don't play them. It was 150 MB and I dowloaded it on dial-up 56k and i would really hate for it to sit in my folder and not be able to play. Please help

Thats a strange one. I will have to think about this. Where did you get the file from and whats supposed to be in it? Get the GSpot AVI tool as well and take a look at it with that, see if theres anything obviously wrong there.

I got GSpot v2.21. It clicked start and this is what it said, "This is, or appears to be, an unsupported filetype. GSpot provides full support for AVI and OGG media streams. Based on its composition, GSpot believes the filetype to be "ASF (.WMA/.WMV)". I clicked on render and it said rendering failded. Then I clicked on the file tab and chose play (using associated player.) and it coiuldn't play. This really sucks. I want to watch it. Somebody out there please help. I hope this is enough info for you goldenpi. Plese post soon.

Subject: Re: DRM protection! How do I get around it

Ah! Told you :-) (Smile) Its a WMV file, or possibly as ASF, but someone has changed the extension. First, change that extension back to wmv. Now try to play it. If it still complains of DRM of some kind, you have an encrypted file. I dont think your going to get that to work. There are ways to decrypt a WMV file, but only on the system with the licence to play it. Brute forcing is far beyond the power of any home computer system. Try freeme, if that doesn't work just give up.

This is why I avoid ASF/WMA/WMV formats.

how do i conver it. Do i need to get a program or something. If so where do I get it. Thanks for your help. I will wait for your reply

Define "convert"? If you cant play the file, you have almost zero chance of converting it. If you can play it, there are various programs that may or may not help - graphedit, tmpgenc, virtualdub 1.3C, etc.

Oh, thats all? Easy. Look under tools->folder options->view (might vary a bit according to OS, but somthing similar). There will be an option saying "Hide extensions for registered file types". Disable that option. Now you can see the extension on the file, just rename it with the new extension (wmv).

ok I did what you said and this is what came up. Where it usually tells you how big the song is and if it is playing or stopped it said this when I tried to play it

OPENING MEDIA then it switched to ACQUIRING LISCENSE. Then a screen came up that said this Server Error in '/ ' Application.

Right, thats an improvment. Its moved on to the next error. Its attempting to contact a lisence server which would then ask for your money, but the servers not working. The relivent site is missing. So, not only is the file encrypted, its no longer supported by whoevers trying to sell it to you. Theres no way your going to view that file.

Use Kazaa to get a new copy after yours.

Try TMD or TBOLT screeners

always better to post late rather than never..

Bad news is that if your looking for American Wedding and they say it's a 150 mb file it's a bogus download. rough news I know. If you absolutely don't want to download it again (the real file is 2 parts about 130 MB each) find a friend with a dsl and offer to make them magic brownies if they'll dl it for you. either that or find a good samaritan who will snail mail you a cd.

The utility is called FreeMe. It works on DRMv2 WMA files, and I think on WMV as well. But few files use DRMv2. Most are DRMv1, which is not yet broken.

Where can I find this FreeMe program? I've done searches on Google but can't find the program. I also only find searches for DRM wmv, I keep getting wma. How can I get a license off of a WMV file? I edited some home movies then upgraded my computer and some how my WMV files got encoded with a DRM license..now I can't play them. Can some one please help me?

In a WM container? A WM container means WM codecs.

I actually have several WMV files that I can play and wanted to know what software to use to capture the video? It has DRM protection on it but I would like to convert it to an MPEG/AVI if possible. Any suggestions on software?

If freeme doesn't work, and it probably wont, there are ways of converting it still. Just not very easy ways. You will probably need to mess around with directshow graphs. The audio is easy, its the video that presents the problems.

Damn! I've downloaded the same kind of file. WMV. Usually I don't mess with Micro$tuff, but this time there wasn't any other source. Suprisingly, it worked.

The file played a few times, after which it stopped, demanding that I buy a license. Considering that it is a 50 meg file, it isn't much. For me it is. That is why I will try to rip the file, and then upload the compressed avi to the place I've downloaded it from!

I've read a bit on DRM 1 and 2, even tried FreeMe on it (good coding BTW). However, I have never been into copy-protections before, nor encryption, so sadly not all is obvious. This is where I ask for help on the subject.

The case here is that the file may be played a finite number of times before closing. Which means that the server keeps should keep some identification data. IndivBox.key ?

Short - what steps can I take in order to get rid of the pesky copy protection?

Once I DO get rid of it I will code an app that removes it automaticly. This time I won't even trust MFC :]

I dont know the details for that, but I suspect you can reset the count by performing two simple actions:

1. Delete all licence information.
2. Change your players UID.

The first is easy. The second is harder, but can be done. Where was the file from? Im fairly confident I can do it myself.

Good. Now I just need to know which flies hold the license info. If I'm correct, it would be IndivBox.key, drmv2.lic, drmv2.sst, v2ks.bla, v2ksndv.bla. Which files can be deleted, and which should be modified?

Does the player keep the info in it's exe, or does it keep it in an external file? If it is an external file, the chances are that the structure is quite constant and kept at a single adress in different versions. Any specific info would be appriciated.

About downloading it - I got it via DC from a pal of mine, who didn't yet know that the file is actualy protected. The file appeaded strange when only the newest w1nd0w$ media player was able to read it, and only after downloading a license. He just deleted the file and forgot about it.

Sorry, didn't notice this post.

No information is stored in the executable file. As for the others:

IndivBox.key - its actually a DLL, unique to your system. A failed attempt to prevent BORA cracks. Dont worry abotu it. If you delete it, WMP will probably ask you to contact MS servers for a new one.

As for the others, backup and delete. Microsoft has an app that clears it all automaticially, they used it in a demonstration, but they wont let anyone else near it :-) (Smile) If the files vanish, WMP should just reinitalise its DRM system. Microsoft didn't expect people would want to delete a licence. Its layered with measures to stop you transfering or altering the files, but nothing to prevent deletion.

Freeme should have come with a technical explanation that will tell you all you need to know to clear licences.

I've tried. As it should, it began individualisation. And it didn't work. The files I deleted were the personalization files, in a nicely hidden directory. Deleted from command.

Goldenapi, do you see any other possibility's?
