Hey everyone. New here, but I have a suggestion for you all.

I use a nice program called RecAll Pro to rip audio from any file and it doesn't require a hardwire jumper. It will record directly to a file from all of your audio sources recognized by your sound card. A nice bonus is to use K-Lite's Codec pack for direct encoding to MP3/Ogg files. The codec pack also comes with a load of video/audio codecs and GSpot as well.

As I'm still to lazy to deal with protected audio files (I get my music from borrowing music cd's), I've only used the above to rip audio from dvd's and wmv files. Check out the paths below:

I don't get all that recording malarkey. I know it should be really simple but the quality of the recording isn't that good and I don't know what file type to record it as or anything. :( (Frown)

Easy to do badly, hard to do well - I need to write a tutorial when I return home, but I am unavailable for a week or so.

are you still trying to find a way to convert your protected wma's to unprotected ones? email me at wmaconvert@yahoo.com if you're interested.... just converted more than 500 files just three hours ago

download Gspot and Videolan - the first will tell you exactly what you need to play it, and the second is a player with intigrated codecs - its completly isolated from the windows directshow system, so anything that effects WMP or divx-player shouldn't affect videolan.

I just downloaded a DRM protected album from MSN. Was looking for a solution to burn to CD hence why I was looking here. Have just tried to use Realplayer to burn a CD and.............it worked!!

It may be because I have a Creative Zen which allowed a licence to be downloaded to copy over to the Zen but when I tried burning with Nero 6 it wouldn't let me as there were "not enough licences available" but Reaplayer had no such problem.

It appears FreeMe cant find your license. And those keys dont look valid. Very strange, and I have no idea what causes it. Run the file through asfview, post the output.

Object 15 looks odd, but I think its just a script that displays a "Download WMP10!" IE window if you havn't already got that player. The DRM must be one of the "unknown objects"

I need to get that program expanded to read more object types, when I have finished my assignments. But for your file... I cant help. I think it might be a file modified just to disable freeme, and its far beyond what I can handle.

i am a real novice, but i do have a DRM protoected .wmv file with a a valid license (at least for 30 more days). I also have about 6 keys and all sorts of info from a log of a DRM-enforcing application(is that what you'd call it?). I can't tell if the verdict in this forum is that is possible to decrypt .wmv's w/ DRM or not. I wouldn't think it was that easy, but again i'm a novice...

I've started with cryptography basics to come up to speed, but if someone could point to some other reference material to bridge the gap to reading the technical.txt file from freeme

thanks/

The verdict is that it is sometimes, but not always, possible to decrypt a WMV you have a license for. And never for one you havn't a license for.

WMA is a lot easier, you can run loopback-record attacks on that. Anyone can do loopback-records, dispite the attempts of SAP to stop it.

do you think that someday someone will figure out how to crack these and that in the meantime i should just keep them?

also would it help to backup some of the license files just in case I need them in the future for that reason?

I think we should be able to pool our resources and figure out a crack. Keeping all relevant material (licenses, keys, etc.) is a must in this effort. I suspect some of us have grown weary in the plight of dealing with such protections. Some of us have not, but are simply clueless.

How to combine the knowledge of some with the energy of the others?

Collecting as much data as possible with as many examples as possible seems to be one useful activity. At the same time reading and learning as much as possible about the tools used is another. However, this is a most formidable task without the help of those already at least some-what familiar.

A WMV-decryption crack? Very difficult. Its far too hard to brute-force, and the cypher is well-tested. If any crack is produced, it is designed so MS can easily patch it - though some users may have to download a new player version to play new content.

WMA is already easy enough to break, if you dont mind a reencode.

If you wanted to break WMV... you would need either one supergenius (this is how freeme was written, but it appears the patch to unbreak WM has already been deployed) or a team of experts in cryptanalasys and reverse-enginering. Espicially reverse-enginering. WMP is debugger-proofed, but with virtualised machines and enough skill it could be done.

OK, so WMA is easy ehough and I hope we can lay that to rest........

It has been stated that decrypting a WMV with a license is possible. Now it is siad to be "very difficult". Couldn't freeme be altered to address whatever patch was used to disable freeme in the first place? This would take someone who is quite familiar with freeme as it now exists. It would also require the examination of known working licenses and keys. I am starting a record of all keys and licenses:

90% of the keys are 32 characters

All files have a 32 character GUID that distiguishes them of the form 8-4-4-4-12

The license seems to be a 11,594 character word.

I realize this is simplistic, but one has to start somewhere.

The option of loopback-record is not appealing as I understand the quality loss is intolerable.

The only other possibility I can see is to know which files are needed, how to feed them to the player, and at what time.

This may all be in vain once I realize the true difficulty in this task, but I need to learn about cryptography anyway.

I have yet to utilize any of my engineering resources.........

Loopback-record through an analog connection is intolerable. If you record either through a local digital loopback (with the right drivers) or SPDIF/Toslink cable, then there is no loss of quality other then for recompression.

The licnces are signed, if you modify them the change will be detected.

I think the weak-point of WMV protection is below the player. The licences are signed, the player loaded with tamper-detection, and decryption done real-time to make it difficult to grab data from memory even if you virtualise the system. But if there was a sufficiently good programmer who could write a video filter-driver that huffyuv-compresses any overlay windows and saves to an AVI file... that would work. And it wouldn't break any DRM system directly either, so it might even be legal. Such a program would be extremally difficult to write, it would need a professional programmer with experience of windows driver programming.

I think the decryption route is the most elegant, but obviously the most difficult. Using a loopback recording method via analog or digital is just a pain in the a**. I'd rather rent and burn which is very easy. The right people could use freeme as a to start, clean it up, and then modularize it to accomodate any changes M$ makes. The problem is that as "that" crack would become widespread M$ would get wind and make the necessary change and around around we go............that is if it were ever done. Which is the other problem, anyone working on this is doing it as a hobby without compensation (at least monetary).
Perhaps some willing and able folks could be found at the hackers conference

No.

Ripped and protected with DRMv1, no valid license. That is not difficult: It is mathematicly impossible to achieve with a practical amount of computing power.

You are one of many to learn why using WMA for CD-ripping is a very bad idea.

Very little hope - the key to cracking is 'if you can view it, you can save it.' Implicit in this is 'if you cant view it, you cant.'

I advise you to give up. Download mp3s from the p2p network if your choice.

'bout that expiring thing, does turning the clock back work...?
or does the player get the date and time from a server...?
and will it read from the PC's watch if it can't get to the server...?

Ah, thats a nice bit of work from Microsoft.

The time comes only from the local clock. It is never obtained from a remote server, always the local clock. And yes, you can turn it back. *But*, each time a file is played the time and date will be recorded in the license. If the clock is set back, it will not work until the time catches up again.

So, if you set the clock back before playing, yes, that buys you time. But if you forget and play after expirary, the license is disabled and setting the clock back after that will not work.

must be possible to create a program, to back-up a license, when a new one arrives...
get it running on startup copy the back-up licenses to the license folder & turn back the clock...

think it can be done in a batch file easily :D (Big Grin)

You cant back up licenses individually. Only WMP has the keys to read the license database. You might be able to back up everything, but I suspect measures are in place to prevent that somehow. WM-DRM is a very comprehensive system.

If I ever purchased some WM-DRM protected content and wanted it to last, I would probably do so to a vmware machine and back the whole thing up. But I have a vast amount of space available - few people could spare the couple of gig needed for that.

it's totally ok to back up everything, but then we got a problem when a new licence arrives... but else it's quite easy to doo...

isn't licenses placed in files? in a single folder?
then it's not a big problem

...

if we have to create a program for "chearing" the licenses, then we need to on the install

1 save the install time (we can do that in the registory)

2 backup the licenses (copy them to another folder (New licenses)-folder)

3 startup w/ windows

....

what it'll have to do on "common run's"

1 set time back (read the time from the registory, and set the clock)

2 check for new licenses (can't we just copy the whole folder to (New licenses)-folder, with a "don't over-write files" attributes)

3 copy the (New licenses)-folder files to the original license foler

...

The licences arn't placed in seperate files - they are all part of one database file.

The database file is encrypted and bound to a unique ID generated randomly - I think when WMP is first ran, or it might be when the first license is installed. That is just to prevent the obvious technique of moving the license files to another system.

The file is encrypted - unless you can break the encryption, there is no way to read or manipulate the licences individually.

How it detects if the file is replaced with an older copy from the same machine I do not know - but it does, somehow. I do know that the DRM system does not work unless the "secure storage" service is running - it probably uses this to store some often-altered value in the licensefile, and assumes the file has been replaced if the values dont match.

This thread is getting too long. Could we just start seperate ones in the "copy protected CDs" forum for any future DRM-related questions?

hey i just have a question....the sony ericsson v800 cell phone has this drm phone protection thing that prevents the user from using any non-copyrighted MP3s as ringtones..meaning the MP3s have to be specially designed for ringtones..so on and so forth....does anyone know how to get rid of it?

This won't help now, but in the future, only rip to mp3 or wav format. And don't use Microsoft products to do it, use third party software (Nero, Musicmatch Jukebox, etc.)

You could also try re-installing 2000 on your system and convert the files to wave then burn them to cd's as audio cd's then re-rip them after upgrading to XP again. Of course, there is no guarantee that it will let your new installation of 2000 play them either but it's the only shot I think you've got. Someone else may have a better solution.
