We need a central registry of indie artists we can broadcast royalty free. Anyone with a list of Indie contacts please email it to fmguitars@yahoo.com. If I get some input I will set up a web site for indie contacts. |

I keep asking if a webcaster can avoid royalties if they only broadcast indie music with their permission. Would it work? |

We are talking about the Dmusic site doing streaming music from their members in just that sort of experiment.
Check out the beginnings of the idea in that forum there.
Every song on DMusic was posted with blessings by the artist him/her/themselves. I would htink they can stream them on the internet with no fear of royalties ever. |

Until the RIAA decides to adjust the law again at least.
My other idea is a music-free radio. A webcast of news, programs and no music. Bit like that station at 90.5MHz. Radio 4 I think? |

I think the blessing of the artist wont make any difference. The copyright belongs to the label. |

Not if the artist doesn't sign with a label. There must be some talented artists who wont sign the restrictive contract. |

Let's not forget, Artemis Records has already pledged royalty free usage for internet broadcasting. They've got some really good stuff, Warren Zevon, Peter Wolf, Flipp, and they just signed Boston. Their catalog of music would probably be a really good place to start. |

Seems like the independent record labels would be happy to just get their stuff played...perhaps limiting it to a few songs on each album that are royalty free. Honestly, I just want channels that I can listen to new music that I wouldn't be able to hear on a clearchannel station. Getting the big record labels out of the picture is a plus.
In regards to talkradio broadcasting: here's a liberal talk radio station that also broadcasts over the net. http://seattle.indymedia.org/ At least the spoken word hasn't been outlawed yet. |

Indies are interested in getting music played. Royalties and licensing are up to the individual copyright owners. Just because someone wants compensation doesn't make them evil. Do you have a job? Do you work for free? Then don't expect someone else to work for free. God knows they put more time and effort into recording even just one song than you put into your job your whole life.
The blessing of an artists makes all the difference in the world. Try respecting them once in a while.
The person that creates something should be the one who decides how their music is distributed, copied, promoted, and offered to the public.
Kudos to Bonzai007 for recognizing Clear Channel as a big (perhaps the biggest) part of the problem in the music industry. They are one of the biggest factions driving up the cost of music.

Musicfann You do realize that when you listen to Britney on the radio in your car or at home she gets nothing for for that right? ASCAP, BMI, ans SESAC apply to songwriters and publishers only.
IF you think the clear Channel situation is bad now, wait till they really attack webcasting (which has started already) Only the huge corporations can afford it, because in addition to the ASCAP, BMI, ans SESAC, they also have to pay performance royalties, which terrestial radio doesn't.
I see webcasting as a internet radio rather than a download service (sure I can capture it but I can capture radio too) You ever take a look at the requirements for a compulsory license? Much more restrictive than Terrestial Radio. OH and you want interactive? Deposit at least 1 Million in an escrow account and when we feel like it we'll discuss it. Maybe.
You want the RIAA collecting your clients royalties? Given there track record of "losing" royalties? Soundexchange is part of the RIAA. They share office space and attitudes.
A better source for indies is RoyaltyLogic an alternative to SoundExchange and not invlved withthe RIAA in anyway shape or form. |

"God knows they put more time and effort into recording even just one song than you put into your job your whole life."
This is perhaps the funniest comment I've ever read about musicians. I wish I could do my job drunk, pilled, psychotic, and naked. Then maybe I'd get a better understanding of what it takes to make it these days.

"God knows they put more time and effort into recording even just one song than you put into your job your whole life." - musicfann
"Airbourne is a fine family tradition" - my father
Perhaps some seem to think being famous is too easy, and some seem to think... well I just dont know what... lol I know I have to play guitar or I'll explode. Some songs come so fast I can barly write the words, some songs are full of emotion, some are just fluffy fun. The hardest part of recording (for me) is getting a babysitter. Oh, I dont think that its easy trying to get a new band off the ground and I know being famous isnt all thats its cracked up to be. All jobs suck, some just suck less.
